... to be built around 1000 AD but have been destroyed multiple times (by warfare or fire usually). They are then built up, presumably of similar architecture as the original. Entire "old town" areas have been rebuilt like this. The result can be a beautiful area that feels so much like it must have been at its peak. The core of the question is not the aesthetic quality but whether this is truly the old town and its historic buildings.

Over coffee, Sharon and I compare experiences in Prague and Budapest. We both feel that we have had excellent ones. For me, I could have spent a week more in each going to the many museums in depth while Sharon has obtained the feel of the city and seen the main sites so feels sated.
By 10:00 we are on a train for 2 hours to the small town of Gyor. It has a large pedestrian area with a ...
... as a trade route because it sat right between Prague and Vienna. There was a beautiful palace there, and our hotel was right on the picturesque city square. I should say 'village,' because it was such a small town. Most of the towns we passed on the first couple days were very small - three or four houses. These were then surrounded by fields and small forests.
There's a lot of farming here, so we see trucks and tractors rambling down the road and pass fenced in ...
... girlfriend sandra will be opening a coffee house / bar in a few weeks. They are taking over ownership of one already running, so we went there for drinks later in the evening. About 8 friends came, and most of them did not speak any english... i am used to it by now! There was a fuse ball table, and i have never seen anyone play like them. Apparently the men in town are much better, which I find hard to believe!
Gyor, Hungary ricolola... last 1,000 years or so and as such the artistic and architectural styles run the gamut from baroque and rococo all the way back to romanesque statuary in the cellars that was defaced by the invading Ottoman Turks.
It's also one of the biggest wine producers in the region, making some pretty tasty stuff.
Dunajska Luzna, Slovakia mozi... around (in the rain) until we found someone who worked there. He said that because the museum was open the day before for the holiday, it was closed today. Wonderful. So we hopped back in the car and drove to the southern outskirts of Budapest to Szoborpark or Statue Park (where it was no lobger raining -- Yay!). Statue Park is another outdoor museum; one where an enterprising collector has stored a vast number of ...

Komarno, Nitra, Slovakia thailon... weren't many places to eat along the way, so I took the opportunity to stop in one village where there was a restaurant (and quite a few bikes outside). German is the only second language around those parts, and so I tried to interpret the menu without much success and so not for the first time ended up pointing to the plates in front of another diner to indicate my order... In the early evening I stopped in another village where ...
Komarno, Slovakia travellerbruce... Overview
The historical town of Mosonmagyaróvár, crossed by a number of rivers and creeks, full of green and monuments. There is a good thermal bath attended by many Austrians from nearby Vienna. Being an univeristy town with a very old center, Mosonmagyaróvár has lots of romantic cafes and restaurants. There are quite a few bike roads leading even to such distant places as Györ and Bratislava. The Danube coast ...
