Bangkok layover

I arrived late last night, at the new airport in Bangkok. It is enormous, and very sterile looking, but that means clean, which isn't a bad thing. Having just spent a few hours in Tokyo's Narieta airport, which is similarly spotless, I feel like I'm being transported between clean rooms. Throw in the genericly plain airplanes (despite United's attempt to feel unique) and I've been in a culturally and environmently ambiguous state for 24 hours. Then comes Bangkok. Had I traveled directly into ...

We're in Asia!!!

After approximately 24 hours of travel (!), we have finally arrived in Bangkok! Steve's strategy? To sleep whenever he felt the urge. Laura's? To NOT sleep until we got here, which actually worked. The problem? She couldn't sleep when she got here! Ah, jet lag... We're planning on an overall city tour this morning, because we just have a day before we go to Phuket island on the Andaman Sea. So no sightseeing to report yet, but Steve would say that his highlight of the journey to Asia was how ...

Bangkok in a Day

Well, we did Bangkok yesterday, and it was great! Tun from the hotel took us around the city to the Grand Palace and a museum that houses royal pieces like outfits, swords, and money from the dynasties. It was amazing! We also took a tour of the house that King Rama V built and lived in at the turn of the 20th century. It reminded us of a Biltmore tour (except without shoes on!). Finally, we ended with a tour of the largest gem store in the world, specializing in sapphires and rubies (i got a...

Day 1: Lounging about in Bangkok

... ping pong', 'pussy blowing smokes rings', 'pussy swallow razor blades' and so on. Mitzi and Miss Moneypenny clearly need to buck their ideas up.

In the evening, we experienced Thai karaoke. Nuff said.

Then we had a midnight massage - of the therapeutic kind! There are literally massage parlours every 20 feet, so it seemed churlish not to try. It is nice - an activity to be repeated.

Thailand, love you long time mister...

... and apologised for the inconvenience, as with most Asian cultures rather than understanding that some type of recompense is expected from such poor show, all they tend to do is nod and smile a lot, which is what I got a lot of!!!

Still, my suite was spectacular and the views of Bangkok from the 22nd floor were out of this world.

However, feeling quite frazzled and slightly out of it, I decided to go down to the Hilton Spa centre to ...

The beginning - Bangkok

... pretty quickly how vital bug spray is and now Sarah has a couple of nice welts on her calf. Had a fairly early night, because by that stage we had been up probably a couple days with only a few hours sleep on the flight to Brunei. Day 2. Got up and had some breakfast, so we had something in our stomachs to get us through the day on our tour. Got back to the hotel to meet our guide, and he showed us to the car. A beat up old Volvo, complete with Playboy sticker. We're both ...

A Passage To Bangkok

... three-wheeled motorcycles that are ubiquitous around Bangkok. Slightly cheaper than a regular taxi, they are able to scoot around through traffic much easier. The breeze created by our journey felt cool and refreshing, although the bus exhaust inconveniently located at nostril level counteracted the effect somewhat.

The shower was hot, the bed comfortable, the Pad Thai delicious. Little did we know what the next 12 hours would bring…

... to Jeab (who looks after us) who owns the house we are in and instead we made sarnies, thank goodness for the 7-11, without it I think Ellen would have starved. It kept us amused to watch the activities of the Monks, and it became an activity to spot the funniest things that they did. At the end of this week P4, P5 and P6 had a sleepover at the Temple and had 2 days being taught by the Monks, we were invited to watch and have lunch there. The 2 ...

... even the most disinterested type onto the all-pervasive shopping culture, and the ever-reliable MBK shopping centre is something of a Bangkok institution. No first-time visitor to Bangkok should miss out on the option of visiting the Grand Palace, and the reclining Buddha, though laid-back is hardly a quality you would attribute to the state of Bangkok's traffic, despite the opening of the MRT skytrain network, and an underground system more ...
