... can imagine how the others felt when we told them. Our Wine Waiter got to know everyone quickly. How on earth we have this package is a mystery so now we have to work out how to spend our $300 onboard credit which was also included.

Veliko was a cultural capital during the Middle Ages, and they have found traces of human settlements here beginning in 3000 BC. We planned to take a train to Plovdiv, but the guy working at the hostel told us the train tracks were under renovation, so we decided to take a bus instead. ... it was small but had the most amazing story to tell and frescos to view, perhaps the pick of all the churches we have visited. Veliko Tărnovo was the pick of Bulgarian towns visited and we enjoyed exploring the city in our free time and checking out the souvenir shops. ... they were right - these were real ruins, with minimal touch-ups. Since the construction was about 12th century, what I do find is very cool: ruins of the palace with a couple dungeons intact, holes in the hillside with iron bars; the execution corner, where criminals were thrown off the side of the fortress to land on the rocks below; and of course, a church at the top of the hill.
