To be frank there was little to see or do here - the port itself was less than inviting with huge Shipyard signs and lots of derelict looking ships. It is the largest port on the Black Sea and one of the largest ports in Europe.  The City itself wasn't much better with many old buildings in various states of disrepair and ruin although we were told the Council was working on having them restored.  Given ...

... until they leave. Then we will travel overland to Turkey's eastern neighbor, the Republic of Georgia. We don't know a lot about Georgia but it sounds like an intriguing place and it is off the beaten tourist track. We should have time to do research while in Istanbul.

Of course we will continue to blog. Perhaps a short one for Turkey then another for Georgia. Check our dash board.

... we moved on to our first of what would become many Eastern Orthodox churches, with lots of icons, and no pews. The country is about 85% Orthodox, with some Roman Catholics and protestants, and only a few Muslims.
