... parks wildlife loop road. We also wanted to check out what was going on with the buffalo that had been rounded up last week. I'll let the photos tell the story of what's happening with the buffalo.
If you should ever find yourself in this part of the country we would recommend both Custer State park and the Norbeck Byway ...
We were up early today for the short drive from our campground out to Custer State Park. We had arrived in Rapid City in time for the annual buffalo roundup and we were looking forward to taking this event off our 'list'. We've included quite a few pictures that we took along with a few that a friend of a friend took. You will be able to ...
Custer State Park, South Dakota, United States thesairsOn this day, we packed up camp and headed to the Black Hills. We went through Wind Cave National Park where we sighted our first buffalo, Tatanka. We couldn't believe our eyes. We had gotten used to seeing cows. This particular one was big and fluffy in the head. We could barely see his eyes. His horns came out of his head, shiny and curvy. He wasn't doing anything but standing there like a statue. He was ...
Pringle, South Dakota, United States spiraljourney... where we camped. We did not light fire, because they were afraid of people using firewood from out-of state, because of possible insect infestation. Here, it was very pretty, not as cold and wet as Missouri. The sun setted nicely behind the black hills. We weren't too sure how far away we were. In the evening, we stared up into the bright sky filled with the milky way and star people. Every now and then we caught a falling star.

There's a place out here near the Badlands named Wall Drugs. The place is in Wall, SD and is the Western equivalent of South of the Border ..... every few miles there's a silly billboard for hundreds of miles. Aside from those signs .... there is nothing and I do mean nothing. Still the Badlands are beautifully stark
Custer, South Dakota, United States theconroy... at the facades of the buildings but without any further information as to what exactly went on here. We stopped for the night at Hot Springs, a very homely town just into South Dakota that we also found had largely closed for the season. Many of the motels and hotels: closed for the season. Lots of restaurants: closed for the season. And the towns large pioneer museum: closed for the season. But we were still enticed to spend the night here ...
Hot Springs, South Dakota, United States lauravanwaas... 5 miles per hour and believe me they really meant it. They call it the needle for two reasons. There are mountains of granite that look like needles or stalagmites shooting straight up into the sky some as high as 200 feet. One of these is called the eye of the needle that not only shoots up but has a has a hole through it that looks like a needle. There were 4 tunnels through the rock walls. Three of them were one lane only. You've got to see these photos. It was one ...
Hot Springs, South Dakota, United States ridewithjoe... was one of the three states I hadn't yet been to. So now I've been, but I need to go back since I still need to see Yellowstone. So now I just need to get to Montana and Nebraska. After our little detour, we drove over to Wind Cave National Park. We figured we wouldn't be able to get a tour till tomorrow so we figured we would see about signing up for the next day. Much to our surprise, they had two tours left ...
