Our Flight to Islamabad OR Paranoia on PIA!

For safety reasons it was decided that we should fly rather than drive to Islamabad where we had booked a connecting flight two days later to Urumqi, China.

The KKH from Gilgit to Islamabad passes through Indus Kohistan and the town of Besham which is located on the bulge of the Swat Valley, the hot bed for Taliban infiltration. Kohistan is also known as being some the wildest area surrounding the KKH with little ...

The ancient city of Taxila

... to resist earthquakes. Some men were working to restore some of the stone walls and we stopped for a glass of hot, sweet green tea with them. The afternoon arrived quickly and we prepared to go our separate ways - V & S were catching a train to Lahore and I went to find a bus to Islamabad - It was sad to say goodbye and strange to start off on my own again but I was also excited by my next plans so with hugs and smiles we left each other for our next adventures.

Bomb, what bomb?

... while we haggled ourselves a room nearby. Connor had stayed in Lahore with wobbly guts.

Islamabad itself is nothing like a normal capital as it was built during the 1960's and is made up of lots of sectors and zones, with names like F2 or C1 and is for the most part relatively leafy, calm and tranquil - nothing like the other capital cities we have visited in this part of the world. For the most part this is because the grime, crowds and general hubub ...

... t be bothered to see them all. Last day in Pakistan and also two more days before I start working again. I'm just gonna spend all my remaining rupees eating. I passed by an ice cream shop yesterday in the Blue Area and they were serving banana split for only Rs200 (less than 2 pounds!), so I've decided to get me one of those later on :) Flight tomorrow is at 8am and arriving Manchester in late morning.

Farewell India - hello Pakistan

... till tomorrow amidst much shouting and applause. It was then onto Lahore and a fantastic hotel. Dragoman's agents are really sorting us out. We turned on the TV only to find out about the Danish embassy being bombed and as we were supposed to be going to Islamabad today there was a sudden contingency to the contingency. We haven't gone to Islamabad but Rawalpindi which is a town very close by. Pakistan is just so different to India. There are virtually no women on the ...

Our group would not know until three days later about the tragic events back in America. After a forced departure from India, I returned to Martha's Vineyard in a rainstorm, with blistered feet, tendonitis in the knee, insomnia, and a feeling of intense displeasure and uncertainty in the world, of expectations ...

Hell amongst the pious Part II

... in town??). That would also explain why my hotel key ring had a picture of a scantily clad white female, sideshot of bare thighs, holding a pistol (aimed at camera) that peeks out from a gap between her thighs (!!!). I wonder if the very religious-looking (read: has a big beard and wears a skull cap) concierge knows about all this!! So all ...
