... it was completely dark and I knew I wasn't in a safe area. I was then approached by a Turkish man. He asked me why I was walking around that area alone and I told him I was looking for a hostel, but I wasn't sure where it was. He told me to follow him up a more well-lit street and because there were more people in that direction, I followed. He walked about 10 feet in front of me the entire time. Meanwhile, I'm reviewing the self-defense moves in my head that I had learned ...

After the rehearsal, a local guide took us for a walking tour of Ghent, including St Bavo´s Cathedral, home of the Ghent Alterpiece (as seen in The Monuments Men). Unfortunately due to industrial action the actual exhibition was closed... but we did see a lifesize copy of the artwork briefly (which is housed in the chapel where the original lived for 500 years) - until the curator rushed in and closed it as ...

One of the days here we caught the train from Ghent to Brussels, a 30 minute trip, and once there, we did the customary hop on hop off bus trip to get orientated, and then spent hours in the brilliantly presented European Union visitors centre, Parlamentarium. As we had only one day in Brussels, we ...

I really liked Ghent. I didn't stay there long enough to see everything (I missed the Ghent Altarpiece for example), only 36h altogether, but it was great to stroll along the old streets and to have lunch in one of those lovely little cafes full of students.

One last story to end this trip: the only other inhabitant of my hostel room was asian, Korean I think, in the opposite corner of the dormitory. In ...

This would be a day of Bs. Waking up in Brussels and seeing some more of it before taking the train to Bruges, all of it in Belgium.

We started off by waking up a little bit late again, packing our bags, and checking them with the front desk of our hotel while we ventured out for a bit before taking off for Bruges.

We walked around the Grand Place area and surrounding streets some more, seeing that the main square in particular looked less ...
