Saturday was Ghent day.  Dianne and I caught the train in the late am to a bigger, busier version of Bruges. We started with a half hour stroll to get from the station to the city center, and as the streets got narrower, the stores fancier and the buildings prettier we knew we were getting close. The town was another poetic mishmash of architecture through the ages that we had come to recognize ...

... square. As I marvel at St Bavo's Cathedral, I cross St Michael's Bridge. From this vantage point I see a castle in the distance.

I decided to make plans there ...

Kristi and I's last trip together. We got on the train at midnight in Ansbach, switched to an "overnight" train in Nurnberg before making our way into Belgium. There were no "couchettes" (the sleeper cars...that we took to Italy) left when we made our reservation, so we just reserved a seat. The awkward thing is that when you reserve a seat on a night train it is in a little compartment that has six seats- 3 on each side facing each other. Ours was almost ...

Today was my only whole day in Gent. The day to get done whatever I was going to get done while here.

Going for a swim. Always a challenge in a different country. Different pool layout. Different customs. The only real difference seemed to the changing rooms which were the same setup as at a French pool I went to – you go through one door (dry side) into the cubicle and go out another door (wet side). And they had a ...
