After the quake the foreshore gained a huge area and the tide washed up mounds of black shingle from the rivers that covered the shore. The council now uses it to pave roads.

    I wasn't quite sure what would happen a checkout, with Neil not staying and me only paying for a standard room. Still, Geoff the manager seemed OK and didn't charge me more than $104 for the two nights.     ... of wind blew across the hard grey pebble beach from the choppy violent sea, which was a nice shade of turquoise in all fairness. We soon headed back into the shelter of town passing a busy skating park with ramps and half-pipes full of very talented youths. The town buildings did look very cool but the canopy line that straddles the high street housing signs for each shop, totally obscures the view and enjoyment of the architecture, in our opinion.
