... at getting us all to relax and have fun and before we know it, we are 20 metres up and zipping through the forest as if we had been doing it all our lives .... (well not quite!). We have heard the word "awesome" continually since we have arrived in NZ but that is the only word that truly describes the exhilaration of zipping along through the canopy of the trees. ... taller and more modern buildings. After a few of these, the people reacted. The forerunner of the Art Deco society decided to hold an educational walk explaining the architectural gems the people needed to protect. Expecting maybe 20 to 50 people, they were amazed when about 11,000 showed up. Needless to say the point was made and now the town really takes pride in its architectural heritage.

... we reached near to the Hawkes Bays area every plot of land we passed seemed to be an orchard or vineyard - we saw an orchard for sale and for a short while we debated whether we could hack it as fruit farmers. Our conversation was broken up when I spotted the Silky Oak chocolate shop which also has a museum and cafe. Not what I expected to find here but still a nice little treat after a long drive! ... 7.8 on the Richter scale. The whole town was destroyed. In addition the town gained about 3000 acres as a large inner harbor was lifted so that it was no longer under water.
