... some stories about commercial farms that put a few doubts in my mind. I just wanted to complete the work so I could get my visa extension out of the way, so I thought I'd give it a go.

The first hosts I stayed with were Graham and Margaret in a town called Widgee, about 17 miles west of Gympie. They were very nice and there was another wwoofer there at the same time, a Swedish girl called Lulu. We did all sorts of work around the property helping Graham ...

1770 to Rainbow Beach (but no pot of gold!)

... them (Tony put it rather more poetically at the time). The caretaker of the place was a woman who was a little too much like one of the characters from ‘The League of Gentlemen’ and I did wonder, momentarily, whether we may never get out and our whereabouts become just as much a mystery as the origins of the mysterious craters themselves. However, we did see the craters, we did consider how they may have been made and we did get out again.

Eventually, at ...

Dolphins!

... chunks missing from his dorsal fin and tail. He leads a pod of 7 dolphins, and they had a new calf this year, which is the third calf they have successfully raised, which is very exciting since a high proportion of baby dolphins die young. (Can’t remember the exact figure, but I think it was about 1 in 5 makes it to adulthood...)

Christmas & New Years

... is a sand bush track that runs along most of the foreshore of Fraser; this is for the Rangers who service the island but it makes for a good track to hike without having to fight your way through the thick bushland. Best time to do these walks is in the early morning, before the heart of the day (even though this is a bad time for bites) and defiantly not during the peak holiday times. Another favourite pastime of mine is to swim off the back of the boat; the current may be strong but ...

Trip on the Gympie steam train, The Valley Rattler

... alternating sides of the train, resulting in a weaving pattern to the corridor. Decorative metal baggage racks sat proudly over head, above the wooden sash windows. The toilet was located at the end of the carriage (emptying directly out onto the tracks - a note requesting patrons not to use the toilet whilst the train was at the station, on the toilet door!). The small verandah area at the very end of the carriage was ...

Brisbane to 85km from Gympie - Day 220

Left my warm comfortable bed and easily accessible shower in Brisbane to hit the road again. Today I drove 300km through the northern peaks of the Great dividing range. Had the urge to drive on some more windy roads through the beautiful rolling countryside for a few hours. Reminds me of home a little. Headed north after my enjoyable drive in the hills ...

Visitor and Bar Crossing

... happens every time Alana Rose comes in. The marina at Tin Can Bay has been extended since the last time that JJ and I were here some four years ago when JJ and I had hired a catamaran to learn my sailing. Our chart still show the one entrance but now a number of pontoons have been added to the finger which now extend out past the old entrance and there are two entrances depending on which finger you need to get to. Part of the renovation has been to build fifteen small cottages along ...

I Love FREE stuff!

... feed a dolphin for free, we thought there would be a catch but still had a ganders. Tin Can Bay is a very small town but very nice, we stayed in a nice but basic campsite but had the most amazing fish and chips. Then spent the night in a tent with a crappie light playing cards, oh we do lead the life of luxury and excitement sometimes! The next day we decied to have a ganders at this free dolphin feeding ...

Indochinese humpback dolphins are nice

... I took no less than 6,000 pictures of the dolphin. It had poured the night before and rainwater had found its way into our car and everything was wet and moldy. We took a good four hours and cleaned out the car and dried everything. After that we went on to Rainbow Beach and checked into our hostel at 11am.
