Fitzroy Crossing

We drove to Fitzroy Crossing today and checked into the Fitzroy River Lodge. A great park next to a river called the Fitzroy River. What a surprise. We decided to check out the famous Geiki Gorge but it was too hot to feel comfortable on the afternoon boat trip so we are leaving that for tomorrow morning. A few preparatory cans of VB put us in the mood for happy hour at the bar where we paid 2 dollars for a middie of Swan. Nice place. It's currently in the national news because so many aborigi...

Just in Time

Fitzroy Crossing - Day 44 - 45

In summary:

Fitzroy Crossing itself is not a pretty place and we weren't expecting much - just somewhere to break up our journey. The campsite was nice though and a great place to access Windjana Gorge and Tunnel Creek which were both fantastic.

This was my first encounter with crocs in the wild and I was terrified! We didn't see any in Tunnel Creek but apparently they were there lurking in the dark. If I'd known there's no way I'd have been...

Fitzroy Crossing

To those of you who wondered, our last day in Broome was quite fun - updating this blog, catching up on emails, getting a huge grocery shop done and then all afternoon until just after sunset on Cable Beach. Photo here is the typical one you see all around Broome - Camels in the sunset at Cable Beach. As we left Broome, we quickly nipped around the Saturday market, selling mostly local made stuff, everything from handmade baskets to paintings to bizarre foods. We had some food from the Philap...

Kununurra to Fitzroy Crossing

Travelling from Kununurra to Fitzroy crossing. Quite a few sections of roadwork with some spectacular views along the way. It looked flat on the map but there are a whole series of mountain ranges alongside the road. We saw the top end of the Ord river above the dam and it was dry. The landscape changes including a different shape of termite mound, these ones are more rounded and look like brains. Further down the road we came across a grass fire with Kites feasting on the insects escaping th...

Geikie Gorge

Today we had a cruise through Geikie Gorge and saw several fresh water crocodiles alongside the boat. We then walked through this ancient barrier reef from the Devonian period before going for a swim. The white colour is the natural colour of the limestone, scoured clean each year by the Fitzroy river flood the black rock above it is oxidised.

Fitzroy Crossing Rodeo

We went to the Fitzroy Crossing Rodeo today and as Max put it we watched people falling off cattle. The skills of the pick-up crew and their horses were incredible as they tried to get belligerent bulls back out to the holding pens. One bull jumped into the arena over a six foot yard fence then cleared two more fences to get to one of the back paddocks.

Great Bower Birds

Today was a rest day which gave us the opportunity to sit and watch the Great Bowerbirds in the bower right outside our caravan and try and capture the pink plumage on the back of the male's neck. Meanwhile the boys scooted around the caravan park looking for puddles of water.

Geikie Gorge

Well I know it's been a few days but we have finally left Broome, after a very restful and enjoyable 15 days. We did all the tourist things, swim at Cable Beach, ride our bicycles, shop in town, visit a pearl shop, take a trip to the Wildlife farm and of course, ride the Camels on Cable Beach. It all has been pretty fantastic, but unfortunately we had to move on. We have spent the past 2 nights in Fitzroy Crossing, a very remote 'aboriginal' town, but the Caravan park is pretty good and we dec...

Fitzroy Crossing

After breakfast, we went to see the crater. It's a 200m walk, not that hard but the track is uphill and loose rocks. At the top you can see the whole crater - it's smaller than I expected but still was really interesting. After a few photos, headed off again. The road back to the Tanami didin't seem as bad this morning - perhaps one side of the road was better? or maybe having had a sleep helped us to cope. The Tanami deteriorated - not only did we have corrugations, but now there were washou...

... tide to come in. The Prison Boab tree however was well worth a visit - it's like a tree that has been eating donuts its entire life. Boab trees are only found in the northern territiory and apparently originally come from Africa which is the only other place in the world they are found.

Once we'd scooted out of Derby we headed across to Fiztroy Crossing to stop for a couple of days. It's a small place perched on a high mound which is just as well because ...

Fitzroy Crossing

... along the mighty Fitzroy River, however we got there at 1.00pm and there wasn't a cruise until 4.00pm, so we decided to do a couple of the recommended walks instead. We took a walk around the information shack and read up on the area. There are markers on the roof line of the shack showing the water level from previous years (the shack is frequently submerged in water as the Fitzroy River bursts its banks every year during ...
