This morning we had a look at our calendar and realized that it would be prudent to head north as we have but four nights remaining in New Zealand. Trusting our off-season/shoulder-season good fortune, we simply set out for the ferry with no booking. The drive from Nelson to Picton was sunny and gorgeous. Debi (and the Garmin GPS device) chose a shortcut for us which led us over two mountains via hairpin turns and sheer drops protected by painted lines on the too-narrow pavement ...

... There was quite a large teenage emo contingent and the odd mumsy looking type. It seemed like it was probably someones eighteenth, but it was definitely a party that went on until daft o'clock in the morning, in a tent in a field in the middle of nowhere. ... We had steak - which ended up smoking out the entire house and encouraging in the weirdest orange bugs I had ever seen. Seriously, they were hideous. So as well as the smoke we had some nasty bug spray too. Ick. We retired and talked philosophy and politics for far too long - well, I think I did a lot of talking and I'm fairly sure I should probably have shut up sooner than I did. Sigh. ... are basically like a fly on the wall, being a voyeur into other people's lives. So cool. Other than that, we also spent a day out at Himitangi beach, which is about 25mins out of Palmy. The Tasman Sea is wonderful to swim in! And, at the beaches here, you can just drive your car right onto it, so there's no parking lot. Just make sure you obey the beach speed limit of 40km/h!
