We started out our day thinking we would head on north and see where we would stay for the night...our goal was at least to get to New Plymouth. It had been pouring down all night and was still raining as we got up. The rain had stopped as we set off through the busy Wellington streets and soon were heading north on Hwy 1. The highway ran alongside the harbour coast on one side, with a steep hillside covered in houses on the inland side. We learned during the weekend that there are more houses in Wellington that have small, domestic cable car systems to reach them, because they are on hillsides, than anywhere else. The road ...

... It was a short hop of a flight, only 30 minutes and we ended our initial travels at 7pm on Tuesday, February 19th. That was a lot of traveling but well worth it. We were greeted at the New Plymouth airport by Jesse's cousins Chris and Pam. We had a wonderful dinner at Gusto's along the Tasman Sea. 03-Feb: Woke up early this morning from the Eco Lodge YHA in New Plymouth (west coast of North Island). It's a well established township with lots of buildings at the coastal area facing the Tasman Sea. There are also lots of farming &amp; grazing lands - the grass seems greener here due to more rainfall. Many big churches too. ... Cook who renamed Mt Taranaki, Mt Egmont in order to try and get in with Lord Egmont. The name stuck for quite sometime, even being used to name the national park which Taranaki sits in (Egmont National Park), although most now recognise the true and original name of this amazing mountain. ... Lake. Marvellous. The place was completely deserted and I had this whole beautiful scene to myself. What more could there be to life? I made it back to New Plymouth at about 6pm and stopped off at a KFC for a quick snack. Whilst in KFC I had the pleasure of witnessing some girls trying to break into their car with a screwdriver and coathanger. Classy. I got back to my motel at about 8pm and then made some dinner and watched some mindless TV before bed.
