... holiday), but it's fun to pretend I might. I may also drive the car tomorrow. On the wrong side of the road. FUN. Herdis' nephews are great value, they went diving before tea and caught a few fish and some mussles. Gave them to the German tourists staying up the road. Life here is pretty self-sufficient; no need for shops really ...

The Day After...

... he would wear his into work and I concurred knowing full well I would be wearing mine - well I couldn't let him steal all the thunder!
Arranging to meet Frank later, I decided to do some chores and packing. My gore-tex trainers were in a right sorry state and needed cleaning along with the trousers I had been wearing that day. My Travel-pack would also need a trial run to see if everything would fit into it again and I hoped with both my legs shot I would be able ...

The Best Fish Fingers

... bags down and headed out to check DNT and buses and boats to our next hike. In DNT got a call from Sam who accused me of avoiding him and we arranged to meet after I had finished my 'errands' (I wasn't allowed to call them jobs as he said it wasn't really work). Got another hike option (a walk around one side of a lake with a boat return) as well as our 5hour straight up possibility and set off to check if transport made either of the walks real options ...

Reflections of an Ancient Nordic Capital

... tourist from St. Petersburg why she approached me in Russian of all languages. I did not appear very "Russian" to anyone's eyes. She answered proudly in Russian, "Why not? Is Russian not a world language?" I politely refuted her, "No." "Then how come you could understand me?" she retorted. Good point... Tip: When getting lost anywhere in Norway, English is really sufficient unless you really want to practice your Norwegian. Almost everyone ...

The Norwegian West Coast.

... on. Our hostel overlooked the giant lake, which was actually nice when the weather fined up, so we got to watch a guy parasailing behind a boat for most of that night (The sun still doesn't set until about midnight!) When we got up the weather was absolutely beautiful (would have been awesome in Eidsfjord!), but we had already decided to go back to Oslo. Caught the train back and .... it broke down!!! Stuck on the tracks for an extra 90 minutes, but we eventually got there!

... from the train station. But the strange thing about it was that the reception was in a cafe beside the hostel. You are given a key card that gets you in to the hostel and then after that you never see a member of staff again. The hostel seems to look after itself. The hostel was modern and clean but the bunk bed looked like they were custom made to fit perfectly in the rooms. They were about 4 to six inches shorter than a standard bunk. If you are over ...

Homesick v2.0

... beer, they chose Italian. (We are definitely getting smoked fish as soon as we get to Montalcino, though.) At Pasta Central, a student hangout near the fish market, we got big plates of pasta, decent pizzas, and one $8 beer. But the real treat of the evening was the discovery of...Americans! Even better, a very nice family from New Jersey, and better still, with two of the three wearing football ...

I want to live in Bergen!

... and my friend tastes moose meat. How brave! :) The truth is that I didn't like much the whale meat, it tastes like anchovies but even stronger, and I hate them! Logically, a mammal living on the sea couldn't produce a tasty meat... This city is dazzling! I'm already in love with it. I wanna live here! Although it's the second largest city in Norway, it looks more like a village. Late at night we go out for a stroll around the city and finally we end the ...

Wandering the cobblestones of Bergen

... elevation of 1095 feet from the top, so it's not quite climbing the Empire State Building, but close. Up near the top, perched right on the edge of a cliff, is a nice viewpoint with a cafe and souvenir shop. It's also where the funicular railway terminates, for those too lazy or not able to walk to the top. There were lots of people up there, and for the couple hours that I was up there it was sunny and a lot of people were eating outside. I ...
