Vacation=Good, Returning from Vacation=Bad

We're not sure how it got to be December so quickly, but, upon reflection, we definitely did manage to accomplish quite a bit this year - both in the office and out. Here's this month's installment: Amy's Update I spent the last few weeks planning and running some workshops, attending others, making "academic-style" posters for a final project report, and trying to get caught up on background so I can jump into working on the PC project plans. While I generally enjoy being busy and having int...

The Generosity of Belizeans

So there I was last weekened, on a bus with a puppy making my way to Belmopan for the Peace Corps Halloween party. I met up with Keely and after a few minutes of catching up decided that traveling all the way to Belize City that night and then back in time for the Halloween party the next day would be appropriate. So we took the last bus in and surprised Dominic and some of our other friends. The Halloween party the next night was pretty fun...my friend Brian wore a cardboard cutout of Mr. Pe...

Go to San Ignacio! (but have some $ for tours)

... 8217;t returned or called by 6 PM; what a loving husband.

The second Belizean I met here in San Ignacio who provided a bit of insight was Antony, who was just chilling atop the low plaza at Cahal Pech with an iPod. I had just perused the ruins all by myself. The sensation was even more spectacular-- walking alone around moss-covered granite that was once a sacred temple for Mayans ~1,500 years ago. The ruins were green, the trees tall, and ...

... dangerous alleyways to get to there. And we spent the rest of the day on a hot crowded, painted, busted apart school bus with carribean music blasting in our ears and the constant smell of body odor, poop or dead animals for 7 and a half hours. Then we found a nice place to crash here in San Ignacio, Belize. There's a lot of tourists here... A lot of Americans - ugh haha. So I gotta run. Rob wants to go out and play! I'll write more later.

Cahal Pech

After a long day of bumping along what Ndaskoi would have called "free massage roads" in Tanzania, we arrived at Cahal Pech -- Place of Ticks. Yay! It's supposedly the oldest of the Mayan ruins and it's a relatively small site, but that was just about perfect at this point in our day. The complex is in the middle of the town ...

Leaving Belize and Eli

It's spluttering with rain and the island paradise is all quiet as Eli and I head out for breakfast. We've decided to separate our trips, as I need to put a spurt on to get to Panama City while Eli has decided to spend that time doing Guatamala to the full. It feels more comfortable for us not to be settling our trips for the needs/wants of the other and we part on good terms as I rush to meet the water taxi, leaving Eli still in a quandry as ...

Green Hills Butterfly Farm

... As they got older, we saw freshly hatched caterpillars, large caterpillars, and, finally, caterpillars making cocoons. As soon as the caterpillars made the cocoons, the staff would take them out to the enclosed "farm" section where they would eventually hatch and be free to fly around the huge enclosure. She took us out to the enclosure and showed us around. She showed us ...
