The longest hike of my life... (so far)...

After one more day in Buenos Aires where we walked around the Microcenter (downtown) again and saw the Plaza de Mayo (and took pictures this time), we checked out of our hostel and checked into the hotel where we would meet our GAP Tour group that we take to Patagonia.

Our group is a great mix of people. There are only 8 of us which is a good number for hiking. We have two Aussies, a German, a Dane, a Brit and a Canadian, plus us. A very international group! Our guide is Taddeo, a loc...

... dificil, escorregando muito, fiquei pensando como seria descer depois. Aquele gelo todo nao derreteria. Resolvih parar um pouco antes do topo e sentei para apreciar a vista. Valeu a pena subir ateh lah.

... back another time .. lol. The week of Easter is the last week the town of Chalten stayed open due to the weather. The weather in Patagonia in April is sporadic, I would 100% recommend going in the summer months of December, Jan, Feb. , although my time was well spent there nonetheless. Chalten is beautiful, and if you are going to be in Santa Cruz it is a must see, but I personally would not spend any more than three days there and two nights.

El Chalten

After my trekking in Torres del Paine, I decided to go to El Chalten, the other trekking mecca, located in Argentina. I didn´t really do much research before arriving, I just booked the bus and went. Quite a shock when I arrived and realised how small the town was, a population of 200 people. Luckily they had 1 ATM, as I was pretty strapped for cash. The ATM was known for frequently running out of money ...

Torres, Fitzroy and bad knees

... too much as we were wrecked and poor Keith´s knees were getting sore so we sped on downhill. A couple of hot chocolates later and a trip to the microbrewery and we were human again! We met a guy called Pascal from France who recommended we get off the Gringo trail and head for the Carreterra Austral in Chile. It sounded fab so we packed our stuff and off we went back to Calfate to try and find a bus to Chile.

Off to El Calafate and the hills

... are photos in the museum at Ushuaia and it is not hard to understand why Darwin mistook them for some intermediate link between the ape and Homo sapiens. Sadly the misplaced kindness of the Spanish settlers in making them wear clothes out of Christian modesty and live in shelters made them easy prey to disease, with germs sheltering in unwashed clothing and filthy hovels. They died out within a generation. I was prepared this time with my ...

Patagonia!

... our stay. Similarly, the town still manages to be quite quaint and despite ubiquitous construction, it still maintains a relaxed ambiance. We both agree the relaxed air about the town has largely to do with the humbling beauty and grandiosity of Fitzroy which serves as the town's backdrop and center of gravity. We're pretty sure in fact that Patagonia's logo was fashioned after this range of sharp peaks. As dramatic as the view is from town, it ...

Day 186 - Perito Moreno to El Chalten

If we thought that yesterday was boring, today was like being frozen in time but with your brain still working.

The roads were dirt tracks, the landscape outside was non-existent and I have never been so glad in my entire life to have had a novel and an iPod.

We stopped more often than yesterday (mainly because the bus had no toilet) and despite everything the ride was long but fairly painless. I'm sure that our poor ...
