I travelled to Matsumoto with an old friend from university. On the first day of the trip, we visited Matsumoto Castle and walked around the streets of Matsumoto, tasting some local foods including basashi, sanzokuyaki and sansei, local sake. On the next day, we drove along Venus Line, stopping at Utsukushigahara Highland and Mt Kirigamine.

Tuesday, May 26 1. Departed house at 9 am. First went to a cool, clear stream where there were some rare species of plant grows. It was a bright green with hair-like threads and dainty white flowers growing. Kaori met us here and after taking a few photos at the stream, the 5 of us set off again in the car. We drove to the neighbouring prefecture of Gifu to the east. We stopped at a nearby park at Yoro Mountain. This is a very popular spot for both locals and tourists to visit. ...

We then hopped back on the city "Town ...

... area as you had to walk about two miles from the bus stop then into the forest to see this incredible sight, the Japanese macaque monkeys bath in the hot onsen water, and although the park area wardens supply food to entice them to the area and the existing pool is man made it isn't an enclosure and the monkeys roam freely, the pool was built after the monkeys were found one day in a local onsen hotel bath during the winter! Macaque monkeys aren't usually found this ...

Trekked through surrounding mountains of Yamanakako lake for 18km. Beautiful views over the lake, partly cloudy and quick rain shower on top of mountain. Height 1339m. Relaxed at hotel onsen at guest house that evening to rest the tired legs after the day of trekking. Supper in room - chicken katsu curry plus bubbly ...
