Sounds suitably creepy for the season, doesn't it? I finally learned how Door County got it's name. Door County is a peninsula that juts up into Lake Michigan and creates, on its west side, Green Bay (of Packers fame). Off the tip of Door county is an island, Washington Island. Apparently the waters between the peninsula and the island are particularly treacherous and home to many a shipwreck. This earned it the moniker 'port des mortes', or Death's Door, ...

... The other four times were in Michigan over the last two days. Each time, the Michigan Department of Public Works saw fit to announce this important passage. It's the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole (did you know that? I didn't). We crossed it in Wisconsin this afternoon and the only demarcation was the 44th Parallel Winery. Wisconsin is clearly much less impressed with it's singular geography.

... very relieved after 30 minutes when the storm passed out over Lake Michigan and produced one of the best sunsets of our trip.
The next day we started by taking a 4 mile hike along Lake Michigan. We rewarded ourselves after exercising with miniature golf (which we tied in), cheese and wining tasting, and some afternoon beers at some of the local bars in Fish Creek. Our time in Door County concluded with yet another sunset and drinks and food around our campfire.

... down to Baileys Harbor. We decided we had picked the right spot. Fish Creek has a yacht harbor, a beach, a small town full of older houses a lot of which are B & B, lots of restaurants and shops. We visited Door County, Wisconsin which is on the peninsula that sticks out into Lake Michigan. It is very touristy and is a resort area like Cape Cod is to the east coast. We enjoyed seeing the small coastal towns, the light houses and all the things that go with beachy resort towns.
