Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Today we made it the Galapagos! Very interesting terrain.....scruffy, mainly low...similar in looks to parts of Hawaii. We arrived around noon and went to see the MONSTER size land turtles...to see two large sink holes caused by under ground gases....a lava tube....and then the boat to this beautiful hotel! A very full day!

Cloudy morning in the Galapagos!

I woke up very early this morning and had a chance to use their computer. Hope you all can veiw the pictures I have uploaded for the previous days. This morning we are going out on a yacht to see the large iguanas and the blue footed boobies. I will send a longer message with photos later.

A day spent with the sea lions!

We left the hotel this morning about 7:30am and took the hotels private yacht to the island of Santa Fe. The ride took about 1hour and 45 minutes...the ride was rough and many felt ill. Once there we took the dingy to the island and there were many sea lions just laying around the beach. The babies were so cute! Then we hiked a bit and found the Sante Fe iguana....not afraid of us at all. Dad snorkled after lunch and the sea lions were playing around him! We also many blue footed boobies then...

Exhaustion!

We have had 2 busy days! Yesterday we went on the yacht again to a small island named South Plazas. It was very warm. We had to get the sea lions off the little steps to get on the island from the Zodiac!! They grunt and groan but finally move. Then we hiked up this small island to a most spectacular view. We saw Galapagos Iguanas....Marine Iguanas....Frigates....Galapagos Doves....It was amazing. Today we left very early to Barrtolome(sp) Island. The yacht ride took 2 hours but was calmer an...

Galapagos Islands, Ecuador

Off we went today for the Galapagos Islands, a 2 hour flight from Guayaquil ($10 airport departure tax). We arrived in Baltra Island and paid the $100 cash entrance fee for the Galapagos (that's one way to keep down the number of tourists) (Plan ahead: you can't leave the airport until you pay your $100 cash and there are no ATMs at the airport). Took like 40 minutes to get bags and leave the airport after landing. Our hotel greeted us and took us by car for 5 minutes to the island's pier. Ba...

Day 98 - Floreana - Big Sea Lion

... by uninhabited, and a school. As we docked at the harbor we immediately saw four large sea turtles swimming close by, and the usual family of sea lions who came to say hello. Jody and Niamh were of course happy to talk with them. After hanging around for about 30minutes we went to the nearby hotel which had a history of the Floreana island. This island has been predominately inhabited by the Wittmer family since the 1920’s. We then went for an ...

Day 97 - Bartolome - Snorkelling with Penguin

... Jody and Niamh. They were happy to play with the Penguin and Sea Lions. Christie and I came across a wonderful variety of coloured fish sneaking in and out between the rocks. I recognized the parrot fish but the others I could not name. We came across a huge school of blue and yellow fish, they looked like flatfish. There must have been a hundred at least, and they were big, about 8 or 9 inches wide. There were many varied and different coloured fish, more in one place than I had ...

Day 95 - Santa Cruz - No Brakes

... back which we followed. We passed a small sheltered beach and the found where there were surfers. The waves were not that huge but there was no sand, only rocks, and only lava rocks that had jagged edges and surfaces, which were difficult to negotiate in bare feet and not very pleasant to walk across. Not a great place to surf I thought. We returned to the sheltered bay we had seen earlier. By this time the weather had turned chilly and our time at the beach was shortened ...

Day 93 - Santa Cruz - Las Grietas

... about 15 metres above the surface of the water. The water itself was crystal clear with a tinge of green making it hypnotically inviting. It was like looking into a glass of water. The route to the water was by a wooden stairway down about 10 metres but the rest of the way slightly obstructed by a few large rocks that were easily negotiated. There were a few revelers already clambering over the rocks when we arrived. We followed and plunged into the ...

Day 92 - Santa Cruz - The wrong winner

... the first male entrant as he arrived at the turning point and was ushered to go back up the hill to start his second lap. He was well ahead of the second entrant which we also cheered, and he turned as required back up the hill. We stood and watched the third, fourth place and also the 1st and 2nd placed men repeat their laps. After the 1st place man, still well ahead was ushered back up the hill for what we thought was the last time, still well ahead of the 2nd placed man, I said ...
