Holy !%*K

Holy Week (also known as Semana Santa) is the largest holiday in Central America. Essentially everyone in every country has the entire week off from work and most of them head to the beach for vacation. This is a nice tradition, however, it makes it extremely ******* the solo traveller trying to get somewhere when buses, boats, and other modes of transportation are either not in service or jam packed beyond what anyone in the US could imagine. On top of this all the hotel rooms near the coast...

2008 A Seafood Odyssey

After leaving Utila we headed up the Caribbean coast back into Guatemala before heading down the Rio Dulce river via Livingston. On the way we stopped at the Honduran coastal towns of Tela and Omoa, both small, chilled out places . Here was the start of our seafood odyssey as we sampled cerviche (fish cooked in lime juice) along with Coconut Seafood Soup, which included a whole fish with the head and tail poking out! Omoa also boasted the best (according to our bible Lonely Planet) Youth Host...

Finca Tatin was Awesome

After my crazy Livingston day I hopped on a boat and headed for a self described bed and breakfast but more of an eco-lodge type place called Finca Tatin www.fincatatin.centramerica.com . Finca Tatin is set on an inlet of the Rio Dulce. Hammocks abound, fabulous food and absolute tranquility. This was the first time I got into a bathing suite since arriving in Guatemala:) There is also, Ak´Tenamit www.aktenamit.org, a fabulous NGO that fits all my requirements of "a good NGO". The Q´eqchi com...

I guess you should try the tapado

... ask for a tip from you. However, one cool place is Casa de la Iguana—though very far from anything else in Livingston! On Sunday nights, they have a Bar Quiz, and our team rocked it! They had extremely bizarre questions like “What was the punishment for an Icelandic lady who stole a TV?” “How long do slugs typically fornicate?" Anyway, Livingston was hot, the water was brown, and the streets were pretty ...

Jungle Don and Jungle Ron

... The scenery was fantastic and managed to see lots of birds as well as iguana's and monkeys which we fed some bananas. The ruins were pretty impressive set right on the water and in thick jungle. I climbed 1 of the temples which was fecking high and could hardly stand up at the top because my legs were shaking so badly (heigts are not a strongpoint for me). It was however well worth it being able to see the jungle canopy and river for miles around me.
After the tour I ...

Rio Dulce

... a tiny little lodge in which the dorm and rooms (we took a room with a double bed in the end) are over the top of the restaurant/living area in a log cabin with a thatch roof. The shower and toilets were in another small building which you walked over wooden walkways (over the swampy/creek thing). It was run by a swiss guy and you had to buy all the food there (but it was GOOD food – my sandwich came in multiseeded bread :D :D) It was a very ...

What a trip!

... mas or menos. Total cost is 175Q. They said we would have two stops on the way - one in Antigua to pick up some passenges and one in Guatemala City where we would change to a Pullman bus, which is a nice name for a not so nice bus.
The lady seemed really nice and her and I had a pretty good conversation so we decided to buy the tickets. After all, there really was no other way to go there besides hiring a minibus for yourself which was very expensive.

What ...

Two days in...and enough bus travel for a lifetime

... is already far too long and I have not even made it through the first day--let us now catch ourselves up quickly--and I promise to try to keep things a bit shorter next time around. After dinner I got caught in a giant rain storm without my poncho and had to cross two small rivers in order to get back to my hostel--and my shoes are still wet even now.

Day 2:

Early morning departure for Semuc Champey and the caves at Lanquín. a thermal waterfall, a kayak and movie night

... wind.! We rewarded ourselves with a few drinks before catching up on a few domestics. All of us fixed our account and had dinner before finding a big deck chair to sit in for movie night. Gran Turino was the pick and it was just as good the second time around. Salad again for tea.. highly recommend. We had a few games of pool again and chilled out on the dock before crashing around midnight in our aviary again! Antigua tomorrow... long travel day.
