Ometepe Island, Nicaragua

So.... it's actually been a few days since I last had reliable internet access (with a proper english keyboard, at that) so this entry for Ometepe is coming a few days late. The trip to the island from the little town of Granada was pretty quick in terms of GAP travel times, 5-7 hours or so, consisting of a bus, a ferry and then another bus once we got onto the island. A bit of info on the island itself, it consists of 2 volcanos at either end, with a small narrow bit in the middle separating...

One Night in Ometepe

After surfing and lieing in the sun in San Juan Del Sur for almost a week, we decided that we should probably check out some other attractions in Nicaragua, so we left our lovely little beach town and headed to Isla de Ometepe.
Isla de Ometepe is an island formed by twin volcanoes in the middle of Lake Nicaragua and is best known for it´s many hiking trails and for well...being an island made up of 2 volcanoes. Before we arrived on the island, we had convinced ...

I used to work up
there.¨ Us: ¨Where?¨ Manny: ¨Raquette Lake.¨ Us (as we both pound the
table with our fists): ¨What?!¨ Turns out he worked at Raquette Lake
Boys Camp as a windsurfing instructor two summers ago. Teddy´s family
has a camp on the lake and he has pretty much spent every summer
growing up there. And I have three friends from Colorado that worked ...

Perfectamente!

... asking for donations, you can bet we coughed it
up.

Then, walking down the street, were Darren and Nicola, the couple that
we have seen absolutely everywhere. We couldn't believe it. They were
pretty shocked, too, and we decided we simply must sit down over a
beer. It was great fun chatting with them and the other couple they
were with. They are going to be in Argentina when Teddy is, so he might
be able to meet up with them one ...

So, This Bull Walks into a Bar...

... on the trail and then on the beach, dazzled the whole time by an amazing sunset.

The next day we hiked up Volcan Conception, the active volcano on the island. It was fun but steep and humid. We were quickly drenched with a combo of sweat and water dripping from the thick trees crowding the trail. The highlight was seeing White-Faced Monkeys and a huge boa constrictor at the same time.

Personally, I prefer the White-Face to the Howler Monkeys. The Howler are far more ...

Monte Cristi Flooding

... a dog that is calm, not crazy! It has been raining a lot in Monte Cristi for the past month or so, and everybody said that may was the hurricane season and that is when we get a lot of rain. It's just weird because in California in may is when it gets warm, and here it was the opposite effect. It was windy cold and rained a lot. I really enjoyed not sweating all last month, but the downfall of that was that the river started rising a lot and eventually overflowed 2 weeks ago. It ...

... their mother, instead of facing out. In contrast, the painting my aunt has in her condo in the states is of a baby's face, which signifies hope for the future. I bought a poster and some postcards. I was very impressed with all of Bido's paintings and I really enjoy his artwork. You can see some samples of his work on the Gallery's website at: http://www.galeriacandidobido.com/ . After visiting Bido's gallery, we headed to the Zone to ...

My Spanish isn't great, but I can def. feel myself improving daily, so that's encouraging! We have had a Peace Corps volunteer come talk to us, and she was so great, very reassuring that everything is ...

... it would fall on the ground and I would have better aim (but only little time to execute the operation) the cockroach on the other side started to run for it (he was obviously only playing dead and using the spider as a decoy to make its escape). I finished off the spider rapidly and screamed in triumph as I went after the roach again, when suddenly, another roach, a THIRD enemy, appeared out of nowhere and started running at me!! With broom flailing in one hand and roach spray ...

I've got everybody saying "manos de mantequilla" (butter hands) when they drop the ball and it's hilarious. You're probably asking why hands with it's supposed to be fingers? I couldn't remember the word for fingers at the time so figured hand ...
