Little Italy

Not a terribly productive day ... drive to campus (too many cars! too much hyper traffic! no parking!), then back to the hotel, then a walk around the Gaslamp Quarter, then back to campus (too many cars! too much hyper traffic! no parking!), then back to hotel.

... but I did learn that there is a "Little Italy" in San Diego. I ...

W and Rice

At work all day, then late afternoon flight. No problems with flight at all ... arrived, got rental car, then drove the few miles to the W Hotel. Very swank. The "living room" bar was happening ... but we just went to our rooms, then met for dinner at Rice, the embedded restaurant, which serves Cuban/Asian fusion. Food was fine, not fab.

Room is fun ... there's a chalkboard (that received a bit of J. Alfred Prufrock from me) and a window seat. And the linens are wonderful.

... through. I felt a little out of place as we were already the only white people around. As soon as you leave the little corridor and cross the gate, you are instantly solicited to non stop until you leave. $1 beer, 50% off generic drugs, and fake jewelry for dirt cheap is all that fills the air. I also started to feel kind of nervous because I had a backpack on and everyone was looking at us because we were so obviously tourists. I think it was actually ok ...

The 2nd most dangerous place in Mexico

... the woman we went to the market and had a look around. Most of the stalls were either vegetable produce, a large selection of Chiles and also peñatas of all forms were hung outside most of the brick and brak stalls. It was a lively place and we spent alot of time looking at the various products, mostly the massive selections of chiles and also the catus that was served with salads and could be brought as either whole leafs or diced called "nopal" that tasted a lot like celery but ...

San Diego and Tijuana

... soil, we took the trolley (which is actually a train) to downtown San Diego. We got off at the harbor front area and took a walk around. We proceeded to take the bus to downtown center. San Diego is a really easy city to get around and unlike LA they have an excellent public transportation system. The downtown core is very nice-with many shops, restaurants and a blend of old age and new. It has been very hot here so the pool provided a great end to the day!

Welcome to Tijuana...

... full attention of all the street vendors, not always a good thing, it might get a little bit annoying after a while!

The 72 stairs to heaven...

... would be doing on the days we are at sea. I got the A/V position. I will be working with the A/V department and setting up projectors, plasma tvs, dvds, cameras, etc. The lady who is the A/V person is very nerdy. You can tell she is a computer geek. She's nice though, and I'm sure I will have a great time doing this, she also said I will be assisting a lot of the professors and you always make them happy when you fix their equipment, thus getting on their good side. After the ...

... 15 different pubs in the kilt, and having my photograph taken a couple of times (not by the police for a change!). The night hit a bizzare turn as I found myself on stage in "The Yard" on 5th St. singing "Flower of Scotland" with the Irish band... Went down well, despite my obvious lack of musical talent! Things got a bit fuzzy after that, but the morning after, my wallet told me that it was a hell of a night... Off to the beach the next day to top up my Scottish tan! The ...

A day trip to Tijuana

... Mexico and Tijuana is right in front of you. When I got over the border there were little girls selling jewelry they only look like 2 or 3 years old. I told them I had no money and continue walking on! I spent about 4 hours in the City of Tijuana look at all there arts and crafts and even trying a Tequila Sunrise!! Had Lunch at Mcdonalds cause I wasn't quite should of the food, even that Mcdonalds isn't the best thing in the world. I continue seeing ...
