... some time to walk the ancient walls of the town, which afforded it protection at one time.
The guide told us that the town was saved from a bombing by a US military man. Evidently in his boyhood home, his mother had hung a picture of Rottenburg and he had always wanted to visit the town as he was particularly fond of the picture. Years later, when the US troops had planned on ...
Time for a short one after that mammoth of a blog for Prague. Ha that rhymes.
Well we left Prague and had 2 choices. Down towards the town of Plzen, and the home of Pilsner beer, or up towards Karlovy Vary, famous for its natural healing waters and its spas. We chose Karlovy Vary since Chris had had his fill of beer in Prague and Plzen was a little out of the way. We also hoped to maybe get some Spa time in but unfortunately fate was against us there ...
... housed everything from Wheels that were used to execute people,
to masks put on people as punishment for acting like a pig or
gossiping. The medievil times were a hard place to live by the look
of it! Interrogation often involved torture and that was a legitamate
way to gain a confession. So a few hours were spent in the museum, we
then hustled over to St. Jakobs church to have a look at the wood ...
So, today was the firs chance to sleep and gee..I really would have liked to have done that. Dan managed to sleep on the super hard bed in the apartment we were given, I on the other hand woke up with back pain at 2.30am..and at various times from there on. The upstairs apartment then also woke me and kept me awake from about 8.30am..so I got out of bed and moved to lounge room to try and sleep on the couch to make my back feel better..it worked abit and I dozed for a ...
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany jasndanOur very cheap accomodation on the outskirts of Leipzig turned out to be clean, comfy and not too noisy so it was a sucess with sleeping.
We were up and made breakfast before 10am, it was simple by good..and we were on the road just after 10am.. we programmed the GPS to Leipzig with no motorways and no tolls and no traffic, so ended up going a scenic route once we got out of town. We stopped at an Aldi to see ...
After a few hours we reached Bayreuth where we picked up Reena, Wilfried's wife and we went to Hof, this is where my grandmother grew up and spent her childhood. Wilfried’s sister still lives in the house so we were able to tour the house and how all the stories my grandmother told me made so much more sense. I had never imagined it to be like this but this is why it was so amazing to see it. Wilfried also took ...
Hof, Bavaria, Germany drunkendidier... use the wireless. And it worked!
So after talking to my parents we headed to the Burgerkellar restaurant to get some dinner. It sounded cool in the guidebook, but I wasn’t impressed with the décor or the food (they didn’t have a sausage meal so I got wiener schnitzel).
By the time we finished eating, we had just enough time to head back to Market Square for the 8 pm Night Watchman’s tour. Derek had gone on the tour last night while roaming ...
... atmospheric with a walkway through the cells underneath. The tour with the nightwatchman lived up to it's rep and it felt like we were a scene from the pied piper, he had a huge following the night we went. We did a day trip to bamberg and nuremberg and back to wurzberg ( we liked it). Found the beautiful garden area out the back after walking the walls, too late to explore further as our bus was due to leave. And ...
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Bavaria, Germany lilbluaxelotl... for tea.
With a dress rehearsal from 5:30 to 8:00, it was a bit late and she was a little tired, but we went for a walk down by the lake to an area where there are a couple of German restaurants. The one we went to was quite nice, and one that she hadn't been to before, the waitresses were dressed up in a traditional outfit and the ambience of the place was very warm - not all that surprising really as according to the write-up in the menu ...
... 11 and our teacher let us have 1 hour free, so we went back to the hotel. I made some lunch, tidied my room and packed my bags for the weekend.
Our afternoon class was IKK with a new teacher who was really amusing. He has a constantly excited looking face and to explain concepts to us, he performs role plays with himself, which is highly amusing.
Straight after class Trevor and I went to the trainstation to get our trains. Trevor was going to Eisennach ( I went there one ...
