Nick's Subconscious Fears.

Tartu is supposed to be nice. I wouldn't know. We didn't have time to stop and look. Finances, time and route planning meant the 'burbs and the railway station were all we saw. We headed south, determined to get to Kaunus for Nick's flight on Sunday evening. We skirted Voru on the way, waving a greeting to my penpal Silva, who lives there, but was currently not at home.

Nick had a desire to see the Russian border. The USSR's dark shadow ...

In Otepää

... table with three different kinds of ham, cheese, bread, rice crackers, butter, boiled eggs, cottage cheese, jam, cereals, tomatoes and cucumbers, orange and apple juice, some porridge which tasted a little weird, tea and coffee. The breakfast was good and we we're ready for our longest daily trip during our journey - from Otepää to Valga, the city located right on the border between Estonia and Latvia.

Fitting in and getting out

... bits were really good, to me, but the others thought they were too greasy (I didn't know there could be too much). The pastries were the highlight of our adventures, though, and I think we'll be expanding on that concept as soon as we figure out what ingredients to buy. Estonian grocery shopping is still a confusing experience, but it's OK because everything is so cheap! Even if/when we mess up, we can go back and buy the right things and it still costs less than in the states. I have one ...

Smiltene Sabbath

It's beautiful outside. A few days ago they had a big snowfall and the ground is fully covered with white. Temperature is just below freezing. We are looking forward to our second Sabbath on this trip and this time it will be in the Smiltene Baptist Church with Pastor Robert Schultz. Most of the Church has been keeping the 7th Sabbath Day. One thing that masks this is that most calendars in Europe ...

Meeting Robert Schultz in Riga, Latvia

We leave Warsaw and Poland this morning. Again, I'll have to say that this has been a wonderful visit from many standpoints. First, visiting with Andy, Karen and their children Madelyn and Steven has been wonderful. We appreciate the challenges they have living so far from family, friends and church. Next, the Polish experience culturally and historically is one that was of great interest to me. My ...

Estonia: Reflections and Practicalities

... to meet. As a people, they are reserved, polite, and keep to themselves. Even the students running the hostel in Tartu only managed to ask where I was from before disappearing behind closed doors. Additionally, there are no tourists outside of Tallinn. Granted, September is the start of low season, but in the last six days, I've seen three other travellers and one tour group. Most people see Tallinn's old town, check off the Estonia box, and ...

Drinking Like an Estonian

... because we could). Eventually, it came time to sauna. The two other women opted out, leaving me and three middle aged men. What do you wear in a genuine Estonian sauna? You might ask...Nothing...but that wasn't quite going to work for me, so I stayed wrapped in a towel. The sauna thermometer read 65 degrees and it was HOT. We stayed in for 10-15 minutes, sweating out all the badness in us, before taking cold showers. You're supposed to jump in ...

Rural Estonia

... is nothing like a marathon or triathalon, but rather involves cross-country skiing certain distances and then shooting at targets, the challenge being holding your gun steady when you're tired from skiing. In addition to the biathalon, Otepaa also has a car show this weekend, featuring mostly cars from the 50s and 60s, all waving American flags. Happening place, indeed, but none of these are reasons I chose to visit. Instead, I was drawn by ...

Student Towns, Yellow Submarines and GTs

Following the turn around that was Tallin it has been onto Tartu, Estonia's student capital. From our arrival, immediate pub crawl, and massive night at a beer hall made from an old ammunitions dump carved into a mountain, we have dominated this town. Estonian's pride themselves on their Karaoke, well atleast all of them at this beer hall did. Then up we stepped, two drunken Aussies ...

my start)

I was born here =)
Also I study at Pskov Polytechnical institute.
City isn't big. And I think it's good for life. But it's boring for active life. Only 5 clubs. 2 cinema. 1 theatre, bowling, billiards, karaoke, any bars.... not so many.
Not big pay for work. Complexity is find exclusive clothes.
