... pretzels as well as small ones on thick threads. Apparently you buy these little ones and wear them around your neck and pop a pretzel into your mouth whenever you feel hungry. Should have done it.

No Pomeranians:

Poland has a state called Pomerania. I figured that Pomeranians must have come from here but unfortunately we didn’t see a single Pomeranian the ...
Warsaw, Central Poland, Poland carpefelineFirst, a note on the ubiquity of kebabs. With the exception of Turkey, none of the destinations we have visited has kebab as a local dish, but one could be forgiven for thinking so, given their popularity. Kebabs have become a familiar sight on our trip, and have come to our rescue on numerous occasions, particularly when arriving late at night in a new city, when every other restaurant has closed down; or when we find ourselves bereft of funds. It's gotten to the ...
Warsaw, Central Poland, Poland fiseb... didn't help myself by walking for 20 minutes with my pack from the bus stop to the hostel. Luckily I've already met some people here, and we all seem to even have the same plan for moving on, to Krakow on Friday. Nothing here is written in English, restaurant menus included (unlike Thailand, where an English menu was almost always around) so the more people to translate, the better.

I'm off to keep moving for another 5 hours or so, but have a great day everyone!
Warsaw, Central Poland, Poland sarakmillsToday I got to experience Warsaw in daylight. I got up fairly early and found some breakfast at the deli next to the hostel. Then I took out the free guidebook I got at the airport and followed the Royal Route past some of Warsaw's most beautiful buildings. It starts in Old Town at the Royal Castle which is now a museum and also houses concerts. It didn't appear to be open though but they were busy setting up an outdoor stage in the square in ...
Warsaw, Central Poland, Poland travelingdiva... as much). After the museum, David had almost had enough, but there were a couple of memorials I wanted to see. We saw the Monument to the Heroes of the Ghetto. We found Pawiak - built in the 1830s it was a political prison, used for incarcerating enemies of the Tsar. During WW2 it was the Gestapo's main prison facility. 100,000 people passed through its gates - 37,000 were shot there, over 60,000 were deported from there. The guard was preparing to lock the gate when ...

Warsaw, Central Poland, Poland jaakkoturkkaI spent the weekend in Warsaw where I went to visit Basia. We haven't seen each other for more than a year so it was really good to meet up again, talk, laugh and share some travel experience and future plans. I also met her friends (who were really nice!), some guys crazy about Estonia and Agata;) All in all I had a really nice weekend and it was so good to went away from here, even if for only for few days.
Warsaw, Poland kamischka... At this point in time, I'm not sure of where I am and how to get home and ask the bartender to call me a cab. I go outside to wait for the cab and end up chatting with this group of people that are going back to centrum. I ask them about any good places to go and basically follow them to centrum. From there I get the last tram for the night and go home. I am greeted by dad and I eat/inhale pate and bread. I quickly fall asleep after that.
Warsaw, Poland kasia-waw... plaques help to remind the world that thid DID happen and that you are never to forget it, no matter what heretics say, and as the decendent of a Pole who experienced the rath of the Nazis during WWII I appreciated that. I remembered getting a bit teary eyed actually and as I'm typing this the tears are starting to roll down my eyes. After walking down a few more streets, I came across this mural, which I regretfully didn't take a picture of it but I remember it ...
Warsaw, Poland swisherdThe Museum of the Warsaw Uprising is a very modern museum - about 3 years old and very interactive - with so much information about what happened before, during and after the uprising. There were heaps of people there - I felt that a lot of them were Polish and there were lots of children as it was the holidays. One comment displayed was made by a BBC commentator during the war and that was that the Polish people, when things were going ...
