Carrie Moor goes on an adventure of her own!

... had a buffet carriage on it , but apparently encountered a rush last night and so had no hot food! They did have a little parcel of nasi lemak - a staple, small Malaysian dish of rice, cucumber, sometimes chicken and a fish curry. In the afternoon one of the cleaners knealt on an empty chair int he carriage and started praying - it was interesting to see how much prayer takes priority, even over work. We reached Jernantut - the first of a few stepping stones ...

... a stampede and I managed to feed them in between being clibmed all over and bitten on the **** as they all tried to get my attention. As it had rained and flooded there recently I was quickly covered in mud. I had been told to bring a change of shirt for the elephant sanctuary but was not told I should wear an old shirt here. We then moved on to the sugar gliders and got to handle a baby sugar glider which we named Ben. We then saw some quails and rabbits ...

... choice of two sizes of blowguns. I bought two full blowdart kits, one of each size, complete with real pointed darts. What would the Consumer Product Safety Commission or the National Toy Safety Board say? For that matter, what the heck was I thinking? What sane father with two aggressive, over-active boys buys real blowguns? Actually, I know exactly what I was thinking. The blowguns are beautiful works of craft, and ...

... out loud and trying to hurl herself off the path, which would at that location have resulted in a two-hundred-foot rolling plunge down a 60 degree slope. I had to grab her and hold her to keep her from tumbling away. After a few minutes of very direct discussion, Katharine allowed herself to be manhandled over the tree, still whimpering. About five minutes later we reached the first overlook. We were only 500 ...

Up the creek

... What we got was a high-speed three hour dash up a brown torrent of water up to a half mile wide, in a 14-seat backwoods cigarette boat literally nailed together from what looked like leftover lumber, the whole apparatus topped with a tin roof held on with either coat hangers or baling wire. Fully loaded, the boat had about six inches of freeboard. It seemed very stable. The operator sat in the back steering with the outboard motor while a ...

... listening to monkeys calling somewhere in the jungle below us. We walk back down the hill and come accross a wild boar right next to the path who isn't at all bothered by our presence so we can get pretty close to it. We then take a different route back, when we're nearly back at the river crossing we spot monkeys jumping through the trees. We get back to the where we started from and catch a boat across the river and then spend the rest of the afternoon ...

... fireflys, an owl and a frog (I have no idea how our guide spotted that in the dark!!), it was so peaceful being on the river in the dark and floating down stream, it made you feel very small pearched in a tiny boat next to all those enourmous trees! After a couple of days we felt we had exhausted all the trails that didn't go too far and so we packed up and caught some busses to Kuala Lumpur...during which i discovered some rather delicious samosa type things!!

... if you have done that before. We did end up getting soaked though, not by the rapids, but from the water fights between the two boats. We headed back to KL the next day which included another 2 hour boat trip back to the bus, this trip wasn't as good as the first trip as the boat was way too overloaded and a stream of water was constantly hitting Resh's rucksack, thankfully it was ok though as we had the rain covers on.

Taman Negara

... It was a great spot for my dorm room, as it was outside of town and constantly had a symphony of forest noises, as well as a nice collection of flowers maintained by the family. Looking at the forest from across the large, muddy river provides one of the only panoramic views of the jungle. It rises from the river and into mist, never breaking its cover of thick green. It's not a monotonous green, but rather every shade of green you could imagine ...
