Did the same as first long flights. Tried to sleep a bit - did TV stuff of course and 12 hours later, we arrived in Kuala Lumpur. Did the immigration necessaries and got our bags. Then we took a hotel bus called the 'Mayflower' to the hotel called 'The Federal Hotel'. There are two in Malaysia and one in Sydney. It is in a great spot - the heart of KL.
Easternwanderer stayed here on Feb 28, 2010 during their trip titled: Easternwanderer's Great Adventure.
Kuala Lumpur is full of so much life
- many Plazas and shops
- restaurants, bars and food stalls.
- China town
Everything is very cheap out there!!
Much jet lag after 24 hours of traveling with Etihad and stopping off at Abu Dhabi on the way.
Very friendly people however keep valuable close.
Fri Sep 17 - Day 135 Happy Birthday Steve Feeling fit for some ferry fun we departed Kota Kinabalu in a long, narrow, torpedo speedboat and arrived 3 hours later in Labuan. The time had flown by as we watched a Jackie Chan Kung Fu movie in Chinese, with Malay and English subtitles. Labuan is an island about 8km off the west coast of Sabah at the …
Feeling tired and Petronas Tower closed so went to some nearby malls. They are very big and very crowded. Some clothes are cheap if you shop around but its hard to find anything over xl. Dinner at a local Thai eatery was cheap, filling and tasted good!

Historical Traveler Reviews Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur
I am very surprised to read the negative reviews of many other visitors. We had no problems at all at the Federal. Our room was a very clean and spacious one. Bathroom also very clean and no broken items!
We have been back to the Federal for 3 times now, also in April of 2006 we will be visiting this hotel!
The hotel, which advertises itself as a 4 star hotel, has a 5 star entrance and lobby, but the reception staff treets you as dirt.
Although we arrived exactly on the advised time and the room was booked four weeks in advance, the receptionist booked us in a room on the 10th floor with a view on a 14-story high parking garage, which was only 15 meter across. When we complained and asked for a room with a view the receptionist said there was no other room available in the 16-story hotel.
The food in the revolving restaurant - on the 18th floor - was terrible and just enough to feed a 6-year old child.
The service in the breakfast room was such that you felt that the staff would have preferred that you would not have been there at all.
The bathroom was not very clean and the shower-head was broken.

Federal Hotel-Kuala Lumpur
Stayed for 3 nights en route to Oz, booked a Superior room but what a shock we got, dark/dingy/wallpaper hanging off & the bathroom was disgusting. Went and immediately complained and was eventually offered a lower grade room (but quickly told there would be no repayment)this was marginally better but still basically a dump!!!!
Reception staff were both unfriendly and very very unhelpful, the Duty Manager I think was trying to prove he was the most obnoxious man in KL
Worse still I had booked for 2 nights on our return from Oz-that also was awful!
Be warned stay well clear of this shabby hotel which masquerades as 4 * & should not even rate 1*.
Very Run Down
Stayed one night on a stopover from Australia. The Hotel reception was well furnished and modern, more than could be said for the bedrooms. 15 years ago the hotel was probably lovely but is now in urgent need of a renovation, the bedroom and bathroom were both very large, but dark and dingy and the bath was badly stained. The minibar was empty and tea and coffee supplies were not topped up.
I tried to use a prepaid phone card to call the UK but was informed I would have to pay to use the phone in my room. This service was free in other hotels.
The only good thing was the location which was good for shopping and restaurants.
Don't even bother!
Stayed at the Federal in March and I would have to give it top marks in the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in category.
On arrival the hotel seems up to its so called 4 star's, lobby is as grand as most 4 stars in Asia and a good location, if you ignore the side street to the left of the Hotel which comes alive at night with various unsavoury women
On check in were given a twin room instead of a double, after so are booking to them clearing stating a double they final gave us the desired room. The room, dirty, dark with stained carpets and peeling wall paper, we went straight back to reception and complained (for what seemed an eternity) finally we were given another room to look at, (a so called upgrade) This room was not much better, slight lighter but still stained and although clearing asking for a non-smoking room a distinct smell or stale cigarettes. We rang down and asked to speak to the manager who was conveniently unavailable. So we rang our travel agent in the UK to complain as they had recommended the hotel. After 20 minutes the manager arrived at our room most apologetically and showed us to another room. This room was fine not great but clean, light and spacious.
The breakfast in the hotel was fair although after 10 not much left.
Other than Breakfast nether ate in the hotel as you have so many great places to eat outside.
KL is a wonderful city and the people of Malaysia are one of the nicest on the planet, it's just a shame we had stayed at a 2 star hotel masquerading as 4 star. There are plenty of great hotel in KL just avoid this one.
i reckon if u single or 'hardly ever spend time in your room, then this hotel would b fine. great location for shopping..room terrible and old..i decided to check out on the same day! the photos on the web looks nicer ..of coz..! but then again it's personal choice..as for me..never again!! i recommended concorde hotel for the price!
We stayed in room 1018. We had booked a superior room. which we thought looked very nice on the website. On arriving we were very pleased with the look of the hotel. The lobby looked great, The rest of the hotel floors did not. Not ours any way. Carpets were dingy. and just outside our room the wall paper was peeling off. and our bedroom was certainley not superor !! It bore no resemblence to the photographs of superor rooms. We had a mini bar. !! what a joke that was. There was nothing in it !! The bath plug was broken, the tiles looked old. That room had certainley not been decorated in years and the carpet although clean had loads of stains on it. In publicity for this hotel it stated that it had been refurbished !!! What a joke that is . I think they missed our room. All in all it was a shabby room. I complained but got now were with the staff. I was glad to leave and will certainley not reccomend this hotel.
Great location...beds problematic
The check in service here was pretty efficient (considering the transfer time from the international airport to the city centre takes so long, efficiency is what you crave) and we upgraded to one of their deluxe rooms - I think they have 2 per floor - because we thought that the standard (superior?) rooms were too small. Anyhow, the room was fantastic with plenty of space and it overlooked the pool, which made for good people watching. Everything was spotless (sheets, towels, shower tray), just as you'd expect but the beds, at least to us, were incredibly hard. Fortunately we were so tired from shopping that we didn't care too much! The 7-11 next door (on the left as you come out) was particularly convenient for water/Coke/crisps/beer and the staff were also really nice and helpful. There was a bit of corridor noise, I think the function rooms are very popular, and the lift was crowded out a couple of times with very drunk partygoers and obviously they book rooms in the hotel as well... The buffet breakfast was excellent and there were loads of choices - one of the best hotel breakfasts I've ever had, in fact. We definitely plan to stay there again. The breakfast and service made up for the beds!
We were a little concerned when reading the previous review and so were relieved when we arrived at The Federal and found our room to be spacious, light, clean and well equipped. Not a cockroach in sight. We did reserve a delux room so maybe some of the standard rooms are not up to the same standard. We ate in the revolving restaurant and the Chinese Restaurant on the 2nd floor. It was the best Chinese meal we have eaten and the cheapest. We had 10 dishes between 3 people for 22 ringgits each. The hotel is close to all the shopping malls and restaurants making it really easy to shop and then return to the hotel for a rest before shopping again. We would recommend KL by night tour with buffet meal and Malaysian dancing and KL by day tour. Both were excellent. Shopping wise we thought Lot 10 was the best and the new Times Square the worst.
My Uninvited Companions
In our recent trip to KL, we stayed at the Federal. From the exterior of the hotel, all seemed well. It is not until we checked in, that we realised that this is just the beginning of our nightmare. Our room was dark and not ventilated.
Mid in the night we realised that we have "extra" companions in the room to keep you busy through the night. In addition to the poorly ventiliated room, and poorly maintained toilet, we have cockcroaches running round and on the bed!
Its no wonder why we smelt insecticide when we walked into the room. Its a bad experience that we had to stay in that hotel.. really.
