Arriving in Beijing

A travel blog entry by becks

The day where we arrive in Beijing, get lost, eventually find the hostel and eat duck! Stepping of the plane in Beijing it was noticeably hot; but inside the airport was nice and cool... and suspiciously quiet. Apart from the others on our flight (of which there were very few, we'd had about 4 seats each to relax on) it was pretty much deserted …

We stayed in a pretty cool hostel called "The Far East International Youth Hostel" (Yuan Dong Bin Guan). It had a 24 hour coffee bar where they serve great coffee and play movies for free. They also had a 'do it yourself' laundry room which was luxury for us. The people working there were also very friendly and helpful. It didn't take them long to …

A part of the hotel is used as hostel. Rooms are in the basement and beds are clean. Kitchen very primitive and Wifi is not operating in rooms.

Really standard place, kinda cheap considering its location (which is a big plus!) but standard in every other way. Pricey bar and entertainment and kinda nonchalant staff is a minus. However: This place is for people who need a place to sleep, not to live large in. You get what you pay for: A shower, a bed and wifi. The rest of your entertainment, food and shopping needs is easily fufilled just outside the door in the hutong. FYI: Be on the lookout for standardized cheap scams by the hostel such as having to pay a mindblowing 60 Yuan because you got the bedsheets dirty and they have to clean it or other stuff like that. Keep a low profile and leave everything the way you found it and you will be fine. Might seem intimidating and cold, but things like that are typical and its just a place to stay, nothing more, nothing less.

Far East international youth hostel trip

Never have enough good things to say for the Far East International Youth Hostel. Despite the name being quite a mouthful i'd recommend it for any would be traveller. The service was wonderful, organising trips to the great wall for our group. They even lent us some spending money. There's a bar downstairs which has pool and a library. You can even take a book if you donate one as well. The rooms are clean if a little cramped. And the breakfast service was superb. Its location is also excellent, located amongst one of the many hutongs. The only criticism would be that the bar closed at twelve. Rats.

A youth hostel for more than just youths

We shared a 6 bunk bed room between the four of us. Plenty of room and clean. Bathroom facilities were shared. There was a nice breakfast room with Continental breakfasts as well as cooked breakfasts. Internet room was very handy to research our trips and tours during our stay. The staff were super friendly and helpful.
