Bittersweet Return

Leaving Yellowknife after such a memorable experience was certainly sad. Not only saying goodbye to friends old and new, but knowing we were on our way home. Our salvation was knowing it would now be warmer and perhaps we may still catch that heat wave back home. Our first stop was to visit Grand Prairie, Alberta where Karin's Oma and Opa first settled when they immigrated to Canada from Holland in 1953. We were surprised to find out a welcome wagon had been called, namely Karin's Great Grand...

The Alaska Highway - The Yukon and northern BC

... including license plates, street signs, carved and painted signs in a big shady park. We sadly didn’t have anything to leave, but were amused to find a big painted wooden Australia sign left by some Victorians. We had planned to stay at Watson Lake for the night but it was extremely hot despite being nearly 8pm at night and the place was a bit of a dustbowl so we pushed on. We actually crossed back and forth across the Yukon and British Columbia borders seven times before ...

Along the Yukon River

... stations are in french. Luckily the other one is in english. Right now we are watching Lonesome Dove. Last time we came through, we drove down to Skagway. The drive is beautiful, but we won't be going there this time. You enter back into the USA going to Skagway because it is in Alaska. It was a little cloudy this morning and sprinkled enough to spot up the ...

... tempted us with the tales of these delicacies for days and our saliva is making the Alaska Highway slippery! Our first cinnamon bun trial was at the Continental Divide Lodge. These were pretty good with lots of gooey, sugary cinnamon between the rolled layers of dough. The second one that we tried was the "world-famous" Johnson's Crossing bun. In my opinion, it wasn't as good as the other ...

... by one of the local tourist traps: the Yukon Suspension Bridge. It's not even in the Yukon, it's in British Columbia; presumably it crosses the Yukon River. We pull in to check out the souvenirs, but don't see anything we can't do without, and rather than pay a fee to walk across a bridge (as we'd had our fill of that out there in the wild), we continue northward. <br> We're enjoying the lovely lakes and mountains, and ...

... add to this: We have Donna (Cheryl's Mom) and Barb (sister) arriving in mid May for a visit so we arranged for a B&amp;B for them. Kevin (Cheryl's son) and fiancé Myra are arriving at the end of May as well. Luckily today we talked to our guy and we will be moving into his house after all. May 4 We now are living near Takhini Hot Springs 20 minutes north of town, up the Klondike highway towards Dawson City. This is the complete opposite end of the city. We ...

Christmas Greetings from Yukon

... fund. The name 'Seniors' gave us pause cause we're not Seniors......yet! We met at a neighbour's house for drinks and then on to the dance. It was really fun as we had a table of eight and we spent most of the time up on the dance floor doing butterflies and waltzes. It was a fun night and we found we actually knew other people at the dance whom we had met over the summer, so we are starting to feel like we are part of the community. We now have been 'travelling' for ...

Fall happenings!

... River catching Pinks as they swan by, eating them on the spot. It was like watching pigs feed at a trough; he would finish one fish and then calmly eye the water around his wake in the river and scoop up another. There is a November Bald Eagle Festival where thousands of eagle congregate along the Chilkat River to winter and feast on salmon. We saw eagles on every snag in the river so I wonder how many more will come by Nov.? As we drove up towards ...

The rest of the Summer

... for the Dennis and his 12 yr old Ali to do a 'stalk'. They crawled through the rocks to get closer to the Rams wearing white painter's coverall which lull the sheep into thinking they are seeing other sheep. This all took two hrs while the rest of us hunkered down in the wind, hugging rocks and tried to be quiet. They got close to one ram for a shot but unfortunately missed. We covered a lot of country on our hikes and had a lot of laughs with these kids. We learned a ...
