I left for Normandy in the arvo. Expected to get some sleep on the train but it was so packed i could barely find a seat. Had to ask this big guy to move his jacket so i could sit. As i was taking my big bag off i broke off a button on my army jacket. I sensed a badness was about to happen. It was an omen. I thought about my meger sewing skills. I thought about going back to get Fiona to sew it back on. I decided to press on anyway. I was carrying my posters with me. All 4 of them. Was a mass...
Bayeux, France bhardenwe left Paris Thursday with John, Amanda, and Krystalle, and took a train to Bayeux, just south of the D-Day beaches and the first town to be recaptured by the allies in WWII. the town of Bayeux is wonderful. it is very small, population 15,000, but beautiful, painstakingly quaint with lots of little shops, and tons of restaurants. with some help from a couple of French police officers, we found the 1 hostel in Bayeux called Family Home at the top of a hill right next to a park. the 5 of us g...
Bayeux, France bradentaylor84Today I headed out of the city of Paris, into the small town environs of Bayeux in Normandy. Bayeux is the closest town to most of the D-Day beaches, and is one of the few towns in the area that was left intact during the Normandy invasion in June-August 1944. It's about the same population as Bastogne, and has a very similar feel to the town. It took a while longer to get to Bayeux than I thought, mainly because I pulled a stupid and forgot to verify which station to leave from. I went first...
Bayeux, France dig_swashbLast time I did anything like this was at the beginning of the '70's. Not quite in the vanguard of the hippy trail-**s, but close. Then I was part of a small group of world citizens - mostly from the antipodes - setting off from Paddington on a semi-organised minibus, following the ov**land route to India. You can't take that route any long**. In those days we w**e able to rattle our way through Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan - a small pod of west**n privilege bumping ov** the potholes. Somet...

Bourgoin Jallieu, Rhône-Alpes, France maialex20/09/2005 We left Paris via Gare St. Lazare today and it took about an hour and a half to get to Rouen. What a beautiful city, if one can call Rouen a city, it has more of the feel of a small town, maybe even a large one. The tiny alleyways and back streets make for some fascinating discoveries. I find it amazing to walk through these back streets and find half-timbered houses dating from before Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. If one has interest in churches and Cathedrals then R...

Bayeux, Normandy, France supermarcolWe arrived two hours later in the little city of Bayuex in the Normandy region. Again we had to find a place to stay, so we set off towards the city center. Our Europe book listed the only hostel as been called Family Home, which had signs conveniently leading us to it. But then the signs stopped. We asked a local policeman who was walking with his partner around town. He escorted us to the hostel. Thats how we arrived in Normandy, police escort. They happened to have room available for two n...
Rouen, France tmcclurg... there. It was beautiful, haunting, and eerie to see the sight of where the troupes landed on D-Day. When I was in the museum, I was listening to an interactive audio recording of soldier’s experiences from D-Day, and the first button I happened to push was of a soldier from Mt. Vernon, IL! What a small world. To climb down to the actual beach part of Omaha Beach took awhile. It’s ...

Bayeux, Normandy, France darrenhough74Arrived at Ouistreham just before dark and found an Aire de Service right on the beach and this time it was free! The downside was it was right next to the ferry terminal and the 6am ferry to Portmouth the next day was kill the tranquilo the next morning. Kim's Maison du Scooby cooked up a storm. Pork fajitas on rice - delicious. I gave it 5 stars.
