birds, turtles, sand and water...

Getting to Koycegiz was a bit of a logistical nightmare, (I think from Selcuk - it was three buses!!) but I got there in the end. I stayed in a guesthouse that was recommended to me from the guys I stayed with in Selcuk and it paled in comparision - but possibly because I was only one of two people staying there. The owner was a slightly strange man and he had an 'assistant' who can only be ...

6 ladies, two men, two weeks, only 1 Turkiye!

I was really overdue my holidays, finally getting to take it in October and I just signed up to two weeks of not doing much in Turkey with a couple of friends in a group. For me though not doing much isn't my cup of tea so I took every chance to re-live my old Turkey memories, from food, sights, sea, dancing and ahem, yes the men, again :)

Please come back soon as I update all the stories from the two weeks. Thanks.

Ruined by Tourism

... tour to an island that will most likely also have undergone a similar transition.

Does this actually benefit the area? I have to assume that it does, that the number of tourists who travel through from cruise liners and package holidays enjoy the ability to simply relax away from home, thus bringing in vital income to the area. But I hope that areas that cater to the travellers market (for people like myself) is not ignored as ...

Summer Storm

... I was staying at. Yet again, however, the interest was one sided. Needing to book a flight to Israel, where several American-based Israeli friends were waiting to meet me, I returned to Fethiye.

Back in Fethiye the mind storm was getting out of control. Deep sadness was washing over me. This obsessive pattern of “can’t get him out of my mind” is familiar to me from my life before yoga. And even though this time it was certainly not as intense ...

pamukkale is expensive.

Awoke near Pamukkale and paid a scandalous amount to get in. 10 pounds each to see some tepid pools of water. Even the initially striking karstic rock was pretty much covered in faint brown footprints. The extorsion didn't end there as it turned out that Cleopatra's Baths, the hot spring at the top was an additional cost. We thought we could get away with just paying for one of us to get in and then swapping the ...

... price, which I knew, but I didn't bother checking exactly how much it was. I made one of the worst purchases of my life, which I learned when the bill came...4 lira, or $2.66, for a 250 ml Coke...I was in a foul mood. It didn't help that I was tired and the food, while good going down, wasn't sitting too well.

But luckily at Pergamum we had a terrific tour guide, a short amicable man who kept refering to the group as "My dear guests" and "My dear friends ...

SAILING TO BODRUM (ALIKARNASOS)

... people Bodrum is something like MYKONOS.
Unfortunately we have not much time to visit the Castle with the Museum.....but probably another time we will.

We left with the best impressions and Zinet our tour leader played an important role to this. I however have to admit that I expected Bodrum to be much cheaper than Kos, but I was wrong. Even the food is expensive here, and the souvenirs and everything have the same price as in Greece.

In and Around Yalikavak - 1st 2 Days

... harvesting cotton - huge fields of it. Some by machine, lots by hand. And invariably it's the women doing the harvesting. They seem to do a lot of the animal minding, all the cooking and much of the rest of the work as well. And in their spare time they knot rugs. The men drive the tractors or sit around in the coffee shops drinking tea and coffee and discussing important issues - Chris and John are quite taken with Turkish rural life! The roads we're on don't seem to ...

Nanny's last day with us

... order because it didn't come for a long time and we had to aske for it twice after the original order. The second time they comped us some teas and I sent the kids down the street to buy themselves some ice cream. Nanny was ready to bag it and leave, but I talked her into staying. We were glad that we did because a few minutes later, the flaming fish arrived. Waiters pulled a cart up to a table two away from us that had a giant fish that was heavily crusted in salt ...
