... as I learn later, geography wasn't San Marino's only secret: they were also shrewd and wise negotiators. When Napoleon invaded present day Italy, one of San Marino's regents managed to become his friend. Not only did Napoleon not invade--he offered to expand San Marino's territory! But the San Marinenses turned down the offer. Why? Because they understood the Don't Push Your Luck Principle--also known as revanchism. Don't Push Your Luck Principle ...

... Borgo Maggiore should be famous for: The Ugliest Church Design I’ver ever seen. I’ve seen ugly churches, but not churches actually designed to look horrible. This one has a roof of sheet metal, bent at all sorts of odd angles… Down at the edge of town I find an open field where I take a clip with the cliffs and castles in the background-- doesn’t quite do the view justice… 0524 Hike across an entire country (SM 003, 09B -149) ...

So I wonder... is it too much to ask ...

... at the Old City. This is Saturday evening after all, and I suspect that that’s where the excitement might be… At first I don’t see a lot going on… just a plaza turned into a parking lot, but then I see a crowd of people in an alley up ahead… I go closer to see and find… One of the coolest bands I’ve ever heard. I’m not sure what you’d call the style-- It’s like polka meets flamenco meets heavy metal… ...

... back a foot in sych--one young couple is very good, and keeps going as the music gets faster and faster. Refreshing to see the new generation carrying on a tradition. Hey, who says beach towns don't have "culture"? Finally I reach the marina of Rimini. Unfortunately there's no bridge here, just a ferry. If I take the ferry, my "trail of footprints will be interrupted messing up my Superhike. So I have to backtrack until I find a bridge. Rules are ...
