The big departure

Finally after so much preparation, we are getting very close to the departure date. Dave and I are getting really excited. Empty house, fully packed bags, ready to leave tomorrow. Tonight we are going to share a good meal with some close friends. Lucky we will be sleeping at a friends' house tonight. The move happened so quickly and was so smooth that we have difficulties realising what is happening. On Friday morning we fly from 10am in the morning and we arrive in the evening in Nairobi. We...

Today starts the second part of our trip: AFRICA. So after spending a few days in London to get ourselves and our clothes ready and, we are out of the hotel before 6 am. A little problem with the taxi company ... as we asked for a van because we have a lot of luggage but in their infinite wisdom they have send a black London cab telling us it would be ok. We are obviously stupid we do not know what kind of car will be able to handle our stuff. Anyway we arrive at the airport and have to repac...

As we got up this morning Marg looks whiter than the bed sheets and is not really able to get out of bed as she feel like throwing up constantly. She decided to stay and rest for the last morning and try to get better in view of the light plane ride to Nairobi late morning. So with the boys and Kieran as our driver we went back to see if the killed happened overnight. So we just drive around and manage to see some hyenas and vulture fighting over a carcase and we had breakfast in the middle o...

3rd World Roads

Today we're checking out of the Fairview hotel, and heading to Tsavo West, the largest National Park in Kenya. It's 300 km away, and we'll take the Safari bus all the way there. But we have a new bus and a new driver, Peter, who will be with us for the next 5 days. He's an experienced driver with 17 years on the road spotting animals. The drive is the bumpiest ride I've ever been on. Most unpaved roads are smooth compared to the highway we're on. Giant potholes litter the road, and all the ve...

From Rwanda to Kenya

Sunday was a catch-up day. In the morning, I caught up on journal and blog writing, and also caught up on ongoing work via e-mail messages as well. The Mundelis' daughter Myriam came by to talk to Marjolaine about 10:00 and the ladies chatted until lunchtime. After lunch, we took a taxi in to the newly refurbished Intercontinental Hotel, which is now the nicest in Kigali. We went not for the hotel but for their business center which has broadband Wireless Internet capacity available for a rea...

Day 1-3 : Nairobi

Day 1 – Nairobi.

Woke up in what seemed to be an oasis in the midst of a bustling African city. The Fairveiw Hotel is built on a rolling green patch of land fitted with the most amazing and yet untacky water features and beautifully blooming bougainvillea's and chrysanthemums trees amongst the amazing acacia. Although quite understated it has an old world charm about it with the new world comforts of an amazing swimming pool and excellent wifi connections. It somehow seems to be ...

Arusha to Nairobi

Final day of our tour, we departed Arusha at 6am in the morning. It took 3 hours to drive 120km to the boarder due to the condition of the roads. Thinking it would be better once we crossed into Kenya, the journey continued to be slow as the truck dodged various pot-holes along the way. Arrived in Nairobi mid afternoon, and said goodbye to the tour group. Three of us decided to spoil ourselves, so had booked into the Fairview Hotel, which was an adventure in itself getting there. Due to its l...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Fairview Hotel Nairobi

Fantastic - highly recommended

from Lynnea
My husband & I have just returned from a month long trip in Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania. We stayed at the Fairview twice during our travels & absolutley loved it & would highly recommend it to anyone.

Most African hotels are 'tired' & need a paint job or new fabric on the sofas, curtains, etc. Not the Fairview. It is in immaculate condition & spotlessly clean. I am a huge clean freak & hate seeing dust/dirt on window sills & in corners - there wasn't a speck to found in the rooms or common areas. We stayed in a 'business class' room & it was very spacious. The sheets were white without any stains & instead of the traditional hotel blankets/bedspread (which I won't touch), there was a crisp white covered duvet (no top sheet, so you KNOW it's clean!!) We loved our first room (I think it was #31) as it faced the main restaurant & we went to sleep to the pianist playing in the evening.

The food was excellent in all the restaurants. The Pango (high end restaurant) was suberb. The largest portions of food in a gourmet restaurant I have ever had.

The service was friendly & personable from front desk personel, restaurant staff & to the porters (who didn't stand around waiting for an expected tip, but gladly accepted when offered)

Nairobi is a city of chaos & noise, but the Fairview was a quiet haven & oasis in the middle of it. Beautiful gardens to wander in & a great pool to swim in & relax by. It truly felt safe as there is a check point on the street since it is across from the Israeli Embassy, as well as the hotel check point!

It felt like a North American standard of hotel, yet much friendlier & had lots of character. Excellent value as well!

Gutes Stopover Hotel

from Alf

Meine Erfahrungen im Fairview waren also bestens.

Will stay there every time

I spent one night at the Fairview on the way to Kisumu. After a long flight and being in Kenya for the first time, staying at Fairview gave me a sense of security and a restful night. When I made a reservation with Fairview staff, I asked about transport from/to airport. They sent a taxi driver, who had a big nice sign with Fairview logo and my name, and was very friendly. Taxi ride was charged on my hotel bill. Hotel staff was very nice, and the hotel itself was beautiful - parquet floors, colonial furniture, nice wooden bridges that connected different areas of the hotel... in other words, it was very charming and quaint. Security was another feature of the hotel that made it a very nice overnight stay.

I will stay there every time I go back to Kenya, if I can that is - as they are often fully booked.

I had the best experience at the Fairview hotel.

Good stopover hotel

from Alf
We stopped over at the Fairview for one night before heading back to UK as it was very convenient for the airport. The room that we had was very quiet, spacious and comfortable. Service was good as always in Kenya and the choice of restaurants should provide whatever you want.

Used the poolside bar for casual drinks and fairly substantial snacks delivered without fuss but with plenty of friendliness. I would strongly recommend the hotel particularly for a stopover.

OK

from TAmember10
Stayed at the Fairview for two weeks on and off on a home visit. The Hotel is modern and well maintained, the rates are reasonable. Front desk staff is friendly and efficient. The beds are comfortable, clean but very small in all the rooms I stayed (I was moved around a bit). The towels were clean but a bit worn out. There is a nice outdoor pool. The guest lounge at the lobby is comfortable and has a nice fireplace - comes in handy in June-July. There are three restaurants on site, I tried both the poolside (all day dining) and Mukhtan (sandwich shop), the menu in both reads well but the food is so so. Internet connection at the business center is ok but over priced. Security in and out is good.

The security checks on Bishop Rd outside the Hotel by some embassy can be irritating, Once you are registered guest its much better using the rear entrance from 5th Ngong ave. There are some rude taxi operators at the front parking lot, on several occasions they (unsuccesfully) 'ordered' me to move my vehicle from the loading zone when I stopped to (un)load my luggage.

Overall Fairview is ok, would stay again.

My mom's or Fairview

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am a kenyan and frequently need to visit family. I love to unwind on arrival and before departure, I head for fairview. After trying a mixture of african and foreign dishes I am

ready for my mom's cooking. Travelling around the country I visit fairview for shower and beer and renew old friendships at the receiption and the most beutiful outside jama choma in the world. Their charges are real good value for their services and food and tuskers.

My only complaint is unless you book in advance they are likely to be full.

Pretty Good Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
As far as Africa hotels go, this is a pretty good choice. Excellent service, nice quiet location, and the price is reasonable too. Great food, and good Wi-Fi internet service.

Not that pleased

from A TripAdvisor Member
I am loathe to criticize anything in Kenya because it is a great country, full of people who need our tourist dollars, euros, etc. That said, I probably will not stay at the Fairview when I return.

The location of the Fairview is great in one regard -- airport access, but less than great in another. It is immediately across a narrow street from the Israeli embassy (which is right next door to a large Catholic high school).

My daughter and I made 3 separate one-night stays as we had to come and go from Nairobi. The hotel had a very difficult time getting clear on the fact that we required 2 beds. Only got it right the last stay. We had pre-paid as part of our "Safari," but twice the hotel tried to charge us for pre-paid things and it took some explaining to the front desk staff to get the charges off. The second and third times we were there, we were put in a room on a hallway in the part of the hotel being re-modeled, lots of wood re-varnishing. Last comment: the shower floors were like being in ice--slippery. I wondered how many people had taken a header or worse on the shower/bathroom floors.

Great! You are the guest!

from Tobbe
Nice hotel with conserved old feeling near Nairobi centre. Good rooms with high standard. 3 very good restaurants in different styles. Big nice gardens. Super high security. First of all: Nice personal that really works hard to create a personal cosy feeling.

After my second visit I just long to come back!
