We flew into Nairobi and were feeling a little anxious because of all the crime stories we have heard from travellers. We stayed at the Norfolk Hotel (a Fairmont property) and famous because 'Out of Africa's' Karen Blixen used to stay here. 'Gentlemen' used to sit on the verandah and shoot animals in the swamp across the road. It was a luxurious start to the trip. I was surprised how much English is spoken here and all of the signs are in English. There are 42 tribes in Kenya and most people ...
Nairobi, Kenya cummingandgoingSo we had a great flight and made it into Nairobi at 5:00 AM. Our nice driver, Laurence, picked us up and had champagne and safari hats to welcome us. We slept most of the day in the great old colonial styled Norfolk Hotel. We really enjoyed the hot bath and air conditioning. We went with the driver to pick up Nancy, Mom and Dad at the airport that evening. It was great seeing them, the last time we saw them was when we left the US September more than a year ago. We chatted excitedly as we dr...
Nairobi, Kenya jasonrebeccaThis morning after breakfast, and after seeing off the dental team with our best wishes, Dr. Kirkpatrick, Mr. Mundeli and I headed to the airport for the flight to Nairobi, the first leg of our trip back home. Before leaving us, Mr. Mundeli presented Dr. Kirkpatrick with a Rwandan shepherd's cane as a thank-you gift for his visit and his service in the area both through his sermon, his advice on the possible dental supply project as well as his ongoing assistance in the Good Works projects in...

Nairobi, Kenya shantanuchandTook an easy bus ride up to Nairobi to visit my friend Kevin Boherer, a friend from Mauritania, it was long but I knew I could rest once I got there. I met Chris Snipes at the Norfolk hotel...he was also in Mauritania(coming inas I was going), and I hadn't seen him in 17 years!!! He was also there to visit Kevin from his 'adjudicating' work in the US embassy in Poland. We were whisked off to a restaurant by Kevin's driver Benjamin while we waited to 'pick' Kevin from the embassy at the end of...

... was born there and was lucky enough to be able to get out and find a good job. The place was quite an experience - all the kids seem to know just the one English phrase, "How are you?" and are keen to use it at every opportunity, along with our Swahili word of the day "Mzungu" meaning white person.
He took us to the Youth Self Reformation Group who have built the first vegetable patch in the slum, it's been going for one year, and is amazing seeing as the slum is over a ...
... Veronica led us to two seats in the front row. I could feel my face turning bright red and I hoped we were not interrupting a wedding. The man attempted to regain his thoughts but was obviously still flabbergasted as the congregation began to laugh at him. He turned to a young man and asked him to translate as his English was “not good”. He then explained his surprise to see us and asked us to introduce ourselves. Here we go again. I gave the same ...
Nairobi, Nairobi Area, Kenya gingerschilling... functional and was pretty busy while we were there. I’m excited to help with immunizations on Tuesday. The slum it’s in is smaller than Kibera, but it is also poorer. While yes, Kibera is a slum, it even has "middle" and “low class” areas, whereas Makuru is pretty much all “low class”, and is evident in the roads and buildings and clothing. For example, there are parts of Kibera that ...
Nairobi, Kenya orielle... to post it, it got deleted. So that’s why I’m trying to recall right now and it’s not as clear as it was. But OH! I almost forgot. Robyn’s luggage came, and we went to the airport to get it. Leaving the airport I saw my first wild giraffe, zebra and some kind of huge bird. I almost peed my pants I was so excited and the cab driver just laughed at me. It’s weird how the city and the country collide. On any open patch of land ...
Nairobi, Kenya orielle... values, beliefs and lifestyle. Our tour overall was very interesting and we felt very welcomed by the beautiful people of the Maasai village.
For our last game drive we decided to wake up before dawn to watch the Mara come to life with the rise of the morning sun. We were still yet to see the last of the Big Five, the Rhino, so we kept our eyes peeled for this near extinct giant. We admired the colors of the sunrise and with the light of a new day we ...
