... a festival.
I really had no idea what to expect from “festival” but I heard there was a parade and that they were celebrating something and that it was a pretty big deal for the people who lived there.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into.
I figured it would be cool to just go and watch a Ghanaian parade/celebration
Watch?
Oh no.
I don’t really know how to appropriately describe what was going on in order to give you a ...
... br>Seriously. (there are only about 5 people in this group of 30 or so that I find acceptable to be around so a little venting is necessary here and there to maintain sanity)
I am very thankful for these planned trips which are all covered and paid for complete with a tour guide so we know what everything that we are seeing is, so I could not understand why these hooligans are so whiny.
Okay. Enough of that.
Anyway, so Kakum ...
... this was just as exciting as seeing banana trees) and we looked out at the lake and what do we see?
Crocodiles.
Probably about a good two, three feet away from where we were standing. (fortunately there was a ledge enclosing the restaurant (where we were) from the land (where the crocodiles were)
I don’t know if you have ever watched the discovery channel or anything, but crocodiles are vicious. They can attack in a matter of seconds.
And even though there was a ...
... I guess a lot of the villages that we were driving through don’t really see a whole lot of white people so they got excited. Especially the kids who would run after the bus for awhile waving at us)
We stopped at a “rest stop” on the way there that was probably the most interesting bathroom I have went to since being here. First of all you had to pay 20 peswas (Ghana’s version of cents) to use the so called bathroom.
This bathroom was ...
... rehearsal. When a villager passes away, the group performs at their funeral, and helps provide for the deceased's family. On Saturday, I was able to go to a funeral and see the community drumming group in action. While I could only attend the funeral for a few hours on, the ceremonies/music continued from Friday night until Sunday. At the funeral, two comunity drumming groups were performing (villagers are usually a member of multiple groups). These two groups performed ...
Cape Coast, Ghana derekgray... million, there is a shanty town with hundreds of thousands of people some of whom are refugees from the war in Liberia. Driving in the country is very challenging as drivers especially taxi's or busses tend to stop anywhere at any time. At times one lane of traffic can before three lanes as drivers jockey for position with horns blaring. One long honk tends to mean "I’m Big move" we think; two short honks means “move over I’m small but in a hurry ...
Cape Coast, Central, Ghana annanddave... barman. After a short while everybody wanted me to serve them. I think this was due to my very generous sized nips of spirits that were being added to the cocktails, or maybe because it didn't take 30 minutes for me to make a cocktail. Whatever the reason I enjoyed it and was payed in free cocktails for my assistance.
Another interesting happening was when somebody from the group changed one of the signs in the bar. It originally read, JESUS LOVES ...
... Additionally, there are issues in Africa with parents sending cute children to beg instead of sending them to school, certainly not behavior you would want to encourage. Fortunately, this was not the case with these children as when we passed their parents a ways on, they were scolded and quickly unlatched from our arms. Also, although the children were brazen in their demands, they never attempted to pick-pocket us. They have homes, families, and morals. They ...

Cape Coast, Ghana nettanWe had 2 days to spare before coming back to Accra to deal with the Indian administration to sort out our Visa, so we decided to leave Accra, and headed for Cape Coast, the administrative capital for the British colonial masters. Cape coast is attractive, with a lot of crumbling colonial buildings, dating from the Portuguese and English eras. It reminded us a bit of the images we had of Cuba, especially in the moist tropical ...
