During the second world war, Tonkawa was home to a POW camp for German Soldiers and some 3000 lived in barracks constructed there. Most of them came from the Afrika Corps. In November 1943 they rioted and there was one death, Johannes Kunze.

Today, Tonkawa is home to the North Oklahoma Botanical Garden and Arboretum and the A.D. Buck Museum of Science ...

... out how to turn on the outside water, you know those pump looking spigots that I can hardly lift. I think it is a stop and waste valve. He got a time out or two. When I asked him what happened he said he got put in time out. I asked what that was and he told me he had done things he wasn't suppose to so he had to sit It out a while. ... with his quad muscles. It's a reminder to us all of how vulnerable we are to ailments. My quads and hamstrings are now so tight they could ping any time. After lunch Dr Tom and Christian have to keep slowing for us but we make it through another day. We wonder if Trek Dave is trying to tell us something as our room for the night is 114 and has a plaque on the door saying "designed specially for the handicapped".

Standing Bear Park and Museum

... he won. The judge ruled 'an Indian is a person' and the Government had shown no good reason for arresting. him. Although Standing Bear and those with him were freed, Indians were not granted US citizenship until 1924!

The bronze statue of Standing bear is the highlight of the park.

After Ponca City, which I believe, relies almost entirely on a huge Conoco-Philips oil refinery for its existence, I traveled to Tulsa on route 412.
