Made it down the bay overnight

Survived a wild ride down the bay. Some of the roughest conditions we have experienced on the Chesapeake. Big waves. 30+ kt winds and lots of driving rain. Enjoyed our new cockpit enclosures as well as the heater we installed below. The AIS system which allowed us to identify ships during the night was a big help.

Navy ships don't use AIS so we slowed to enter Hampton Roads after sunrise. Still, with heavy ...

      Disappointing Virginia Beach!

... As we approached Virginia Beach we were buzzed by FA 18's fighter jets overhead! We soon found out we were camped near the Navel Air Station Oceana, the only Jet Base on the East Coast. We were serenaded with their daily training flights - or the sound of freedom! One night we had helicopters (I think) overhead until 1:30am YES in the middle of the night! They seem to be doing circuits for hours & hours. Needless to say we were not thrilled ...

He was on the marina dock and advised us that a US Customs and Border Patrol officer was also waiting for us. We had called into CBP as required upon entering the Chesapeake, but were not informed they wanted to see us or board Pas de Deux upon landfall. No matter. Since ...

... night time glow from Harbour Island, but our course was taking us to the west of it to the smaller glow of Spanish Wells. Entering the Northeast Providence Channel, between Great Abaco and Eleuthera, meant commercial shipping traffic to and from Nassau would increase, but the visibility of large ships at night is very good, even better than during the day. The night glow from cruise ships, lit up like cities, can be seen before the ships come ...

Better late than never! It should come as no surprise to you that we got a late start... just way too much left to do, but we finally hit the road about 3:00. I was really thrilled that everything actually fit into the new Hyundai about where I thought it would - with the car top carrier, of course! Got into Rivermens' Campground near the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia about 9:00 at night, but fortunately, David and I are both good ...
