We decided to take today as a recovery day so we slept in a little and went for a leisurely breakfast before heading out from our hotel. We were able to walk to all of our destinations today. Our first stop was the Hakata Machiya Folk Museum. This museum introduces the daily life and culture of Fukuoka City during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Craft products and souvenirs such as Hakata Ori (folk woven textile) and Hakata dolls are ...

... an hour. Our bottoms were pretty sore from sitting on the wooden seats by the time we disembarked. We arrived in a quaint village and we walked to a restaurant that Haruyo had reserved for us. The specialty of the area is grilled eel - kabayaki. It is served on top of rice flavoured with soy sauce. There was also a soup cooked on individual cookers containing fish, eggs, and vegetables and a few exotic dishes including jelly fish, some kind of ...

... beautiful ginkgo trees, plum tree gardens, stone walls and steps. There is also a small moat near the Hazekata Gate. There is also an underground passageway, called the Kuragari-Truro, as it is dark even during the day (there are lights so you can see your way) and it is the official entrance to the palace - one of the few examples of palaces with this type of underground passage. The beams used in the passageway are whole trees.

Inside the castle is now a ...

    Hagi

On a lighter note, this is Hagi a town filled with pottery and orange groves. A place to sooth the soul with beauty. Bizarrely there was a gigantic modern building dedicated to ceramics in this quiet little island town. Incredible professional pottery in the museum and shops overflowing with more pots. No vanilla ice cream in this town, only orange. Made a change from seeing green tea ice ...
