This morning was a bit uncertain as we found out that the volcano at Mt Aso near Kumamoto is on alert and access to the crater is closed. It was only that I thought to check the Japanese Bureau of Meteorology website for the Kumamoto forecast that we found this out.

Mt Aso is the largest caldera in the world with a circumference of over 100km so we were looking forward to seeing it and the only reason we were going to Kumamoto which is ...

We decided to take today as a recovery day so we slept in a little and went for a leisurely breakfast before heading out from our hotel. We were able to walk to all of our destinations today. Craft products and souvenirs such as Hakata Ori (folk woven textile) and Hakata dolls were on sale. Our next stop ...

... for ages now and we hadn't had a place to make it so this was our opportunity. We found a butcher and he cut us off a small bit of beef to use. It looked so good and was really cheap. We went and got some cheap dinner and headed back to the hostel. A bit later Dave made the tataki and we sat and had it with some sake. It was delicious. So tender, just the best beef. It's unbelievable that such good quality beef is so ...

... were two indoor onsen where you could also have a proper shower. Then further down two different pathways were 4 other onsen, all outdoor. We decided to head to the onsen as soon as we could before dinner. We went in the two indoor onsen first which were very similar and smallish. The water was so warm! Then we went to one of the outdoor onsen. Each one has it's own entrance and indoor area to leave your stuff and wash before getting in. This one was so nice. It was ...
