No One Cares Who Your Daddy Is

I was absently-mindedly gassing up my old Ford 150 the other day when I looked up and froze. In front of me, I mean right there, was a drop dead stunning full-fall gorgeous mountain. Not off- in-the-distance Mt. Rainier, but right there. Green swarth rising to cirlets of golden poplar branches, ruddy blueberry bushes, smoky purple rock, topped by fresh white snow, and finally fresh blue sky.Sky and air so clear. A view from a Tesoro gas station.Only in Alaska. Anywhere else ...

... brows waxed. When it came time to pay for services, I was shocked at the price. The haircut was $38 and the pedicure was $60! Holy Alaska!

I dropped Jean off at the campground and stopped by Kaye Combs rig to ask her if she wanted to ride along to Sam's Club and JoAnn Fabrics with me. Art was doing his "mesmerized by TV thing" and didn't feel like going. Kaye and I got a few items in Sam's and I purchased a shadow box to display all of the souvenir ...

The Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod

... to view the Anchorage skyline. From there we grabbed lunch at Pizza Hut passing a resting moose along the way. After lunch we rode down toward Ship Creek to view the snow sculptures which are part of the Fur Rondy activities. Fur Rondy is a week long celebration of the Iditarod which runs the entire week before. This also includes a carnival complete with the usual carnival rides even in the snow. For those of you who have tired of eagles, here are some dogs.

Flowers and berries and bears, oh my!

... actually SEEN bears, BUTTTTTT you can never be too safe. You know that e-mail that's going around about the bear bells and pepper spray. Well, they don't mess with that, when they go berry picking, they take a pail and a gun. I think I'll stick with the U-pick-it patches out on the prairie :-) Nearly every menu we've seen at any restaurant we've eaten at has given us the opportunity to order reindeer sausage or reindeer something or other. I just ...

... next to a small river. We did see some beaver dams and a couple of swans. Once they got closer to us, they started to honk when they say the dogs. After the trail, we checked out the local Wal-Mart which was under expansion to a Super Wal-Mart. I have not seen one of these since Montana - none in Canada. Since the parking lot was half closed due to construction, it was pretty hard to find a place to park. We then drove back into Anchorage to Pooh's bike ...

Trip to Anchorage

... I tried to smuggle to much face cream on the plane and my husband gave me his butane lighter to put in my pocket in case the bush plane went down and I needed a fire. What I did not know is that butane lighters are considered hazmat! Anyhow I got my first experience with homeland security and hubby lost one butane lighter. My flight to Anchorage was great. When I arrived I ...

... the
highlight of our trip, there many animals here to see in their natural
habitat (not like a zoo) and all the proceeds from the admission ticket
and gift shop purchases go to taking care of them. I even got to feed a
deer. My alaska trip was amazing and I look forward to the day that I
can revisit this beautiful state of wilderness.

The Moose and the Mountain

... With that he turned around and rode back down the trail without another look at the moose. It was absolutely nothing to him, like one from the lower forty-eight would react to a squirrel- this squirrel though, demanded a detour in one's bike ride. We stood in the rain for a while watching her eat. It was the largest animal either of us had ever seen in the wild. Major streets were no farther than fifty feet on either side of us. Finally we gave up on waiting for the moose ...

This is when I got a step-mom

Now I tell the story of how I got a step-mom... I was 4 and Nicolas was 5. My Dad still had no wife. But since it was Christmas, my Dad felt like he found God's angel wanting to help, and now that angel is my mom. Her name is now Mrs. Barren-Peterson. She is only a year younger than my dad, but she was still good then ...
