Canada Day in Ottawa!

A travel blog entry by mrsbaa

Happy Canada Day! Happy 140th Birthday! Since we'd rolled in so late last night, we weren't exactly up with the chickens ... 11:30am before we were out of the room ... DH needed to ask if there would be any parking spots opening up -- I thought he was crazy to even ask -- why would any Canadians be moving OUT of Ottawa on Canada Day???? The front …

... under locals advice was the best coffee available. I left my battery in to get my camera charged (for free!!) and started walking around pretty confident I wouldn't lose my bearings as long as I remembered the direction of Parliament. I ended up passing a BridgeHead and gave into curiosity to try Tim Horton's. Firstly, I couldn't open the lid (spot the foreigner walking around spilling coffee everywhere). Secondly, it was not great. But I think it may grow on me ...

... too many to mention until finally we reach Montreal. I can't remember much about Montreal, so didn't compare with the previous cities. Oh, yes I do remember we were given a bus ride around the city and up to the tallest mountain or hill and the local guide (a woman would you believe) didn't stop talking about the 1812 war again. I think I tuned out, I was dreaming of boarding the Maasdam tomorrow and travelling to Nova Scotia.

... drawcards are located in one area of Ottawa so it was quite easy to walk down to the Fairmont Chateau Laurier. Styled like a castle and now a century old, it looks in place with the parliament buildings and grand nature of the city. Having said that, the lobby looked quite plain and orderly compared to the Royal York in Toronto.

Across the road was a war memorial ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of a Canadian WW2 Raid. The place was ...

... the Carlini’s.....it was so funny! But they got themselves back into the game and got the score to 11-11, and down to the sudden death last end. It comes down to the last two bowls to be played with the Carlini’s holding shot, Mario draws another and his boys are super confident that they are home and hosed....as the trash talking started up again.....I decided no guts no glory and played a weighted shot that split their two bowls out of shot, which ...

    Aristocrat Suite Hotel: Perfect

    from anonymous

Great service. Great location. Great price.

Staff and service are excellent and the rooms are spacious.

The amenities are low but are you there to see Ottawa or are you there to see your hotel?

    Ottawa is an amazing trip!

    Terrific value - modest expectations

    from anonymous

Held modest expectations and was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. The prior reviews on this website were helpful.

Visited Dec/03 and never did post my review. Am currently planning another trip, and have used this website again, so am posting my review as a way of contributing back to this excellent resource.

Received very good price on Expedia. Hotel was worth the cost.

Located on residential street that has other hotels. Ten minute walk to Parliament. Quiet neighbourhood.

Room was terrific. For the price, received great value - King size bed, large sitting area, balcony, small kitchen table, a fridge / sink / cupboards. Washroom was good. As stated by others, you can actually "order in" groceries at usual retail prices plus a $5 service fee.

Two or three drawbacks only. Parking is convenient but motel style. Service was mixed - inexperienced, young staff mixed in with courteous senior staff.

Biggest drawback is that while lobby is nicely renovated, the elevators and floor hallways, as well as the door to the suite room, are old. They are circa 1970 apartment style, which is what the building actually is - a renovated apartment.

But as long as you are prepared, this is a terrific value. Would stay there again.

    Great place to stay

Very nice hotel, the suites are great for entertaining if you are with a group. Carmello's downstairs has great food and drinks for a reasonable price. Only complaint would be that it is time for new carpet.

    Beautiful

I went down with my boyfriend for a weekend last month and the place was beautiful I stayed in the suite just BEAUTIFUL.I was pleased with the hotel the service was great and the rooms were clean and the prices are low.

    A terrific bargain!

    from anonymous

Got a great deal on this hotel via Expedia, and we were not disappointed! The rooms were spacious and had full kitchens. They'll even do the food shopping for you! There's a very nice jacuzzi and workout room as well. We also had a nice dinner at Carmello's - the privately-owned restaurant in the hotel - but for breakfast, we went around the corner to Dunn's Famous - which was terrific! Walking-wise, it's about 15 minutes from all the major attractions. We'd stay there again!

    Aristocrat Suites is great value

    from anonymous

We stayed with kids at the Aristocrat Suites during the recent power problems. Great stay, great value and there's laundry machines downstairs. The price from Expedia was the same as we would have paid for an old motel. Suite was such a find if you're travelling with kids. I just wish they had a pool. However, the Cartier Suites across the street will let you use their pool for $5 apiece. Next time, I hope the mint is open.

    Almost great.

This hotel was almost really good. I like getting a suite for normal room prices. Turns out it has limited hotel parking (which is extra), and because we were there on Canada day there was none left for us. We ended up parking a few blocks away at the city hall (which turned out to be cheaper) but it did mean we had farther to walk and no "in/out" privledges on the car. The room was adequate - clean and a good shower, decent bed, but was run down in some places, with strange things like a missing door knob on an interior door. It is in a great location, close to everything, including some reasonable resturants.

    Aristocrat is a good deal

    from anonymous

We just came back from spending Canada Day in Ottawa and stayed three nights at the Aristocrat Suite Hotel.

The good things about the hotel: - We liked having our son sleep in a separate room, having a living room to sit in when we are not in bed, and having access to a kitchen and a large fridge, even though we didn't actually prepare meals. But we could have. - The hotel and our suite were clean and fresh, furnished in good taste, with everything in good repair, so that despite the good price we paid, we did not feel we were in a dump. I was anxious about this going to the hotel. The furniture was new, simple and solid, not old and rickety, the walls freshly painted, the bathroom newly renovated. - The fitness room was so so, but the whirlpool and sauna were georgous. - The hotel did not contain a stale old smell, even in the older part of the building.- Helpful staff. - The hotel is within walkng distance to most of the sights we were interested in, and is close to a residential area so we got a feel for what it may be like to live in Ottawa.

The less enjoyable things about the hotel: - It's on an incredible noisy street with motorcycles and cars revving it up in the middle of the night, and people shouting and whistling in the street early in the morning. - Our suite was in the older part of the hotel that contained an air conditioning unit that was noisy and did not cool. It was much cooler just leaving the window open. But then you hear all the other air conditioners running in the other units. - The rooms are a bit small.

    Top Notch!

    from anonymous

Our group of 10 were in Ottawa for the National Capital Race Weekend. We were greeted by staff of the Aristocrat Suite Hotel with bottled water, Power Gel and Power Bars, they were helpful booking cabs, with parking advice, with checkout, etc. We would definitely return.

    Great Location!

    from anonymous

We were recently in Ottawa for the Marathon (May 11, 2003) and were very happy with this hotel. It is located very close to the Start Line (City Hall) and is very close to all the restaurants on Elgin Street. Everything we wanted to see was within walking distance. The Staff were very friendly and helpful. The suite was average and clean and the bathroom was beautiful (newly renovated). Everything was in working order. Thanks for a great weekend!
