... the border making our way slowly across the states. The US felt so special. We could finally be in wild spaces without being afraid. There was no longer that persistent threat of banditos coming to rob us because we were foreigners. I could go running by myself along isolated paths and not be stared at or hooted at. ... he tells me they marinate the tomatoes in it. Too bad they don’t offer Take 'n’ Bake!

Four hours later we make it home. The cats are thrilled to see us. I drop my gear on the hallway floor, and, escorted by my furry children, head straight for the shower. Then to bed. My mattress is so soft I feel like I’m floating.

I’ve left Isle Royale, but it hasn’t left me. The window fan sounds like wind through the aspens, and I dream of trees. ...
