Acts like Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin all lived a short distance from the intersection. The area still maintains its bohemian ambiance with a number of interesting restaurants and bars and clothing shop. The Farmer's Market had some really good fresh cherries for dessert.

... He was given a booklet to fill out about different aspects of the island. Once it was filled out he took it to a ranger who asked questions about what he'd learnt etc and she signed a certificate to say he'd completed the activities to become a junior ranger. He then took the oath of a ranger (hat and all) and was given his badge for the Golden Gate/Alcatraz National Park. He loved doing it! Great idea if you've got children with you.
