Paris Arrival

Steve arrives first, at about 7am Paris time. He checks into the Holiday Inn Express Roissy (by the Charles de Gaulle airport) and crashes for a few hours. Lilian and Sora arrive at about 11:00 and are greeted by Steve for a tearful reunion. Return to hotel to freshen up. It takes a while to figure out the Metro system at first but, once we get our …

Because we were extending our trip, we wanted to switch hotels so that we'd be in the city rather than out by the airport. So after breakfast we cleared out of the Holiday Inn, made one more trip to the airport to finalize our new return flight details and then headed over to our new hotel, the Sofitel at Port au Sevres in the south-west part of …

Why am I late? Aaaa, A funny thing happened on our way home to port. There was this volcano in Iceland that decided to erupt and blow ash all over northern Europe, causing airports to close. Yea, that's what happened.

We thought we were safe because we had booked a train to Paris. That’s when the French rail system decided to go on …

. When we finally arrived in Paris, the flowers were blooming, and the volcano had stirred up a lively, party atmosphere. What a great place to get stuck. I'm glad we made the journey.

    Good value, needs improvement

    from anonymous

I stayed Aug/31 to Nov/7, 2004. The hotel has small rooms, with good size bathrooms. There is air conditioning, cofee machine, hair dryer and wireless Wi-Fi internet on each room, but just be aware that you have to buy Internet cards at the front desk at 15 Euros per hour! They also have a public PC where you can use the same internet cards. Breakfast is included, with yogurt, coffe, orange juice, milk, ham, baguettes and yummy pastry. People at reception were very friendly, multilingual and helpful, with the exception of Anatole. The beds are sunken, they need a replacement. Pillows are miniature size. The maid service wasn't very good, they failed to vacuum the carpet properly. The bathroom extractor wasn't working and there was some mold on the bath tub. Being a Holiday Inn, you can add miles to your frequent flyer plan, one reason I selected this hotel. It is located in the limits of the historical Paris. At the north side, there are beautiful old buildings, and at the south, Chinatown with dull apartment buildings like in any other city. However, you don't want to spend time at the hotel in a city like Paris. It is well located, 50 yards from the Place D'Italie metro station, and one block from a large shopping mall with important stores like Sephora (parfums), Printemps and Zara (clothes), and also photo processing and grocery stores. There are ATM's, and a McDonald's and KFC in front of the hotel if you miss greasy stuff; rather go to the small french restaurants (brasseries). Avoid the El Rancho restaurant, the food is expensive and not good. Good value, if they just change the beds and do better room cleaning.

    Good base for exploring Paris

    from anonymous

    Booked on Holiday Inn website.

Location is very good - right next to Metro station with 3 lines so you can easily get around and explore Paris.

Room was basic and comfortable (on 5th floor).

Good continental breakfast every morning. Didn't find any other restaurants we liked in the neighbourhood and ate lunch/dinner in other areas instead.

    Great value, Great area!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Place D'Italie after much research. There are so many hotels to choose from in Paris, its overwhelming. The Holiday Inn Place D'Italie is in a great location. From CDG, we only had to make one connection. The Place D'Italie metro station is very convenient to the Hotel. It was right accross the street. The area is nice and clean. Rue des Gobelins on its right runs straight to the Latin Quarter and then on to Notre Dame and the Rue St. Germain. There are plenty of cafes on this street. Going south, you walk right to China Town. Lots of great places to eat here as well. The mall accross the street has a grocery store, restaurants, and great shopping. There's a Zara store here. The Holiday Inn room was small, but clean. Had a satellite TV, AC, but no mini-bar. There's an ice machine below. No room-service, that I could see. But it was OK. The value for this hotel was great. Below 100 eur. The buffet breakfast was nice, and the staff mostly helpful. Sally was very nice. I would definately stay here again. It has a nice neighborhood feel, not a touristy area at all, but very easy to get to anywhere you want to visit.

    Nice clean 13 district hotel

    from pinceme_ian_dreaming

We stayed 3 nights in a double room and I have to say is was very nice. The room was small but very clean and the bathroom had the best shower we had in Europe. The area the hotel is in was great.

there was two metro stops within 200 yards from the front door and the bus stop was within 50 yards.

The restaurants around the hotel are all great and

not very expensive, just make sure you look at the menu before you order. We are going back to Pais in Dec 2004 for 7 days this time and are staying at

this hotel we loved it. The breakfast was was very good for Europe and the staff was great. We give the hotel an over all rating of A+ for price 87.50 Euro per night, Service, Location, comfort

    Great!

We recently visited paris in July 2004 and booked this hotel after reading the reviews on this site! It is great value for money, buffet breakfast excellent, location good our advice is to explore many fine restaurants in the area and avoid the KFC. Excellent shopping centre and cinema across the road. Metro links excellent it cost us about 11 euros each for travel all day, I would next time try to book a family room as the double rooms are small compared to the standard double size in the UK. Would stay again without hesitation

Good value in a great location

    from anonymous

We stayed here for five nights recently at the rate of €105 per night. This was really good value, the hotel is in an excellent location. The room was small but we had no complaints, the only downside is the beds aren't too comfortable (sunken mattresses and poor bedding). The buffet breakfast was more than adequate. After a day's sightseeing on the first day, we were too exhausted to go far for dinner - and discovered that there are several really good restaurants in the Butte aux Cailles area a short walk away. We ended up eating locally nearly every night. You're also only a walk away from the Latin Quarter and the metro is just across the street. Good value for the price, but I really wish the beds had been more comfortable!

    Brilliant location

    from anonymous

Just came back recently from Paris and used the holiday inn as our base. I have to say everything to do with the hotel was first class, staff friendly and helpful, buffet breakfast excellent and really set you up for a days sightseeing in Paris sufficient restaraunts nearby. But be aware avoid the KFC Outlet opposite the hotel unless you like wildlife we arrived fairly late on the first night of our trip and used the aforesaid as my wife was collecting our food I became aware of a family of mice scurrying about the floor this did not appear to bother the locals in the least but I can assure you that trying to eat a chicken meal whilst watching out for mice running all over the floor and jumping in and out of the seating is not pleasant this put us off of our meal altogether and we left wondering how on earth this outlet could possibly have obtained a food licence. We would certainly go back to this hotel.

    Great Value!

My husband and I just returned from two weeks in France. We spent our first six nights at the H.I. Express Place D'Italie. I had booked the first five nights at the online price of 87.50 Euro which was a great value especially with the breakfast buffet which is included. We enjoyed the coffee machine which offered the option of espresso, capuchino, cafe au lait, regular and decaf coffee. We could make our coffee just as strong as we liked and get as much as we wanted. The room was small but very clean. The bathroom was nice and had a shower curtain, however the bathtub would not stop up enough to hold water nor would the sink stay stopped up. I needed to soak my feet after miles of walking! The only real downside was the beds. The matresses were in bad need of replacing-very sunken in. The staff was nice and the location is just a very short walk from the Metro. All-in-all, we would stay there again if they have replaced the mattresses.

    Nice 3* Paris Standard Hotel

    from anonymous

Stayed here recently and found staff to be quite friendly. Breakfast was adequate - typicall cold buffet style. Hotel was quite modern, v.

clean & rooms were of a good size considering the norm for Parisian 3* Hotel Rooms. Room had bath & shower although some don't. Tea/Coffee facilities, alarm clock & adequate furniture/storage in room. Very close to metro stop with 3 lines going to centre of city. Good sized shopping centre accross the street. Would have no problem staying here again although I found the choice of restaurants nearby to be poor.

    Wonderful hotel location

    from rainlvr

The holiday inn express place d'italie is a wonderful hotel! I've stayed there 3 times and it's the only place I'll stay when I go back to Paris in a few months. You can generally get a great price on the Holiday inn website - I've paid between $75 and $85 a night every time.

They have a great cold breakfast buffet that is INCLUDED in the price!

There are hard boiled eggs, several types of cheeses, yogurt, ham, cereals, milk, toast, pastries, juices, coffee, tea and hot chocolate.

The staff is friendly, although they don't all speak fluent English, but they do ok if you speak slowly. The location is not in the middle of the tourist area, but to us this was a big plus! It's about a 30 second walk to the metro stop from the hotel's front door. The metro stop (place d'italie) has 3 separate lines so it's very easy to get to where you want to go with less transfers. It's maybe a 10 minute ride to Notre Dame and 15 minutes to the Eiffel Tower. If you have kids and need a fast food break, there's a Mcdonalds and Kentucky Fried Chicken across the street. There's also a grocery store and really nice shopping mall about 2 -3 blocks away. The rooms are not large but I didn't think they were that tiny either - you can't expect a room size like you'd get in the U.S. unless you want to pay $300 or $400 a night.

The rooms are also very clean! The bathrooms were modern and average sized to fairly spacious. The other big plus is the fact that they actually have designated non smoking rooms (something that's hard to find in Paris). That's the original reason why we first chose this hotel. I've stayed here 3 times and have no desire to even check out another hotel in Paris since I'd probably pay more and it wouldn't be any better!
