... At 2500kg, they are twice the weight of black rhino with proportionately longer and larger heads and a wide square lip. We never tire of seeing the zebras, wildebeast, kudus and the other antelope that roam here in huge numbers. We seem to lose track of time as we drive along rough dusty back roads. We will sit for thirty minutes or more, with the engine off, mesmerized by a herd, a flock or lone mammal . Before we know it, the dark is chasing us ...

... The next three hours were spent slowly walking around and enjoying various themed gardens. I really enjoy visiting parks and gardens, a very peaceful time. At the Nels River viewpoint we could see where the Nels River meets with the Crocodile River. There were also many Strangler Figs – each tree is very unique from another, an interesting sight.

... glimpsed from the top of a hill some Elephant on a lower road. We (being the trigger-happy youthful type) sped off to find this road at a rapid pace and within a matter of minutes were surrounded Elephants big and small. Later on we were at a water hole with over 70 around and over the few days had some super close Elephant encounters. Other highlights were some jolly spotted hyenas on our evening tour, meerkats doing their wee look-out thing and a ...

... turning down a dirt road, we came across a young male lion (Craig estimated maybe 2 years old) and a couple female lions right along the road. They weren't being very active and we got some good close-up shots. Rox got a few of one of the females 'roaring' (actually, she was yawning), but we might "gloss" over that latter fact when we retell this story!

Unfortunately, a few clicks down the road, it got overcast ...

    ... you're eating.

The 'game plan' (yes, it's a bit punny) is to be up by 5pm and turn on the lights so Craig knows that we're up. He leaves about 5:10am to get in line to be as close to first out the gate when they open at 6am. We're to walk up to the front (good thing we have flashlights) and join him before 6am or he's "leaving without us." So I set multiple alarms so we don't screw up the plan on our first full day in Kruger.
