We drove down from Berlin to Warsaw. IT WAS ****! Rock hard beds that suck BIG ONE'S! Oh and if you want to stand on the balcony and see the view FOR GET ABOUT THAT 'COS THE RAILING'S COMING OFF!!! Anyway so when we got to Krakow we went to the center of town and had a great dinner that had been in the Michelin guide 2008 and 2009. The Michelin guide is a guide ( obviously ) to all the top restaurant's around the world. I got a new pair of shoes there as well. The next day we went to Auschwit...

Krakow, Southern Poland, Poland ruccobearAfter Jasna Gora, we arrived at BIRKENAU, (Auschwitz 2) and only had 20 minutes to walk around. A watch tower and the railroad tracks that the prisoners arrived on were the first things that came into sight. Upon entering, barbed wire fences separated the area in 2 sections and were on either side of the tracks. The prisoner's barracks were to the right of the tracks. Signs tell the history and explain the set-up of the camp near the barracks. This was the part we saw. Everyone was pretty qui...
Auschwitz, Poland travelinkerryIt's said to be Poland's most beautiful city and may have to agree. It started with meeting our local guide, a young blond who always seemed to be smiling. She took us to the Jewish quarter, KAZIMIERZ to which we saw an area where a scene from Schindler's List was filmed. This part also had a memorial to the Jewish from WW II, a synagogue and the birthplace of Helena Rubinstein, one of the richest women in the world. Walking the hill to Wawel Castle, an ivy covered area came into view. I was ...

... names on their luggage, that would make it easier to find when they finished their shower. Then they led then to the "showers" where the people were told to strip naked. The Nazis told all tier unwitting victims to memorize the number of the hanger their things were on and to neatly bundle their things so that the scramble after the shower was more organized. Really, this was just to make it easier for the clean-up crew in about 10 minutes. Also, this ensured that German ...
Krakow, Poland lorybelle... and rousing conversation. My family in Poland comes from modest means and though they don't have much, they would have given us everything they had. Even in the presence of a language barrier, my friends and I sat with my aunt, uncles, and cousins and talked and laughed the night away. When I think back on that special time with my family, I'm reminded of what mature individuals the Evans Scholarship raises ...
Krakow, Poland gypsysavant... When this place was an operating death camp, the wire was electrified. The course to the gate was three hundred meters of unobstructed machine-gun range of fire. To have been a prisoner there would have been utter despair. I just made it in time to buy my ticket. Moments before the train was to arrive, an announcement was projected across the platform that the train to Krakow would be an hour late in leaving. There was time to buy a meal and chat with a fellow from Alabama who was ...
Krakow, Poland fatduck... the pope. I decided not to go inside this church as I was pretty burnt out on churches by this point. Next, we headed back to the area where our hostel was located in order to catch a bus to Wieliczka where a 700 year old salt mine is located. We flagged down a minibus on the street which had our destination on a placard in the front window. The trip cost us only .66 cents for a 15 minute trip in to the country side. Before I went to the salt mines I figured ...
