So, this is how the day started. Our last day in Moscow so we decided to have a French bubbly with breakfast, but because we arrived so early the champers hadn't been opened and we were too polite to ask them to open. But all good so far. We were told it was a 1-2 hour drive to the airport in Moscow. So off we headed with Sergei and as you might …

Much of the physical war damage in and around the Old City has been repaired - but you can make out where walls have been fixed and there are still shrapnel marks on many buildings. A few places are, even now, twenty two years later, not yet repaired.
We took a walking tour one evening in the Old City. Our tour guide was a twenty-something Croat ...
... into town and went to sit on the beach outside the walls with an ice cream and just people watch for a while. We then had a short snack at Bote, an oyster and sushi bar (and yes, tried the oyster sushi) and then just walked around the town. We came across a bunch of random happening in and around the Stradum (including a young boy that wanted to play balloon toss with us and a tv host filming a segment) and then afterwards we went ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Excelsior & Spa Dubrovnik
Perfect in Every Way!
Carved into the cliffs over the Adriatic, steps to Old Town, top-notch service, beautiful spacious rooms and wonderful restaurants! To give you an idea of the service, I phoned the front desk with a terrible sore throat and low fever asking how to best get antibiotics. Within 2 hours the "House Doctor" was at my door and within 3 hours a persription was delivered, all said and done for about $130- you can't get that kind of service in the states! We loved this hotel so much we extended our stay, and of course Dubrovnick is a magical place too!
Having read the reviews of this hotel on tripadvisor, I was determined to pay extra for a room with a great view. Accordingly, I booked online a seaview room. When we arrived, we discovered that our window looked mainly out onto the dingy roof of what looked like a garage, and only a third of the view had any sea in it. We couldn't see the old town and we could only see the tip of the island of Lokrum. I asked to move, but the hotel was apparently full. When I paid the bill, I protested about having to pay extra for something which could barely be described as a sea view. The receptionist was sympathetic, but didn't have the authority to reduce the bill.
Amazing views of an enchanting city
We enjoyed our stay at the Excelsior a solid 4 star hotel by European standards. The rooms were clean and of average size. The staff were quite helpful, but the view is what most recommends this hotel. Our balcony had exquisite views of the city and the bay. It was an easy 5 min walk into the walled city. We enjoyed our stay and just LOVED this city.
This is a nice hotel all in all, but not exactly what it's made out to be. The view from the outdoor terrace and restaurant was breathtaking, but our room had a view of a wall. And it was tiny and it was pretty much below standards of even a lower level hotel in America. However, the pool was nice and they had a small gym which I suppose was better than nothing. It is a bit stuffy and old though. I got the feeling that the hotels over on the Lapad peninsula, espeically the one right on the water was far more modern and fresh. It obviously wouldn't be as convenient to the old town however, but would be more convenient to say, the ferry or boats going to the islands. Croatia is still my favorite place to visit and I had been wanting to stay at the Excelsior for some time, but after doing so, I would recommend trying some other nice hotel instead.
Had our honeymoon at the Excelsior for 1 week in August 04. Room was a seaview with a balcony and was fantastic. Room was a decent size and on opening the blinds the view was breathtaking. From our balcony we looked over the island of lokrum and the old walled city of Dubrovnik.
Best View on the Adriatic
This was a superior hotel experience with a fabulous view and friendly, helpful service. We were upgraded to a suite for reasons unknown to us. Fabulous.
Best Hotel in Dubrovnik, Great Location
Excellent location with stunning views of the old walled city of Dubrovnik. It's the best hotel in Dubrovnik but it is somewhat bland and corporate in style.
We stayed at this fabulous hotel for two weeks in May 2004.
We had a sea view room with a balcony overlooking the Adriatic Sea - bliss. The room was spacious and very very clean. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
I would highly recommend this fabulous hotel.
We stayed at the Excelsior June 2003 for one night on our honeymoon. We booked online and ended up paying about $150 for one standard room. To our surprise, when we checked in, we were led to a corner suite with a fantastic view of the adriatic and dubrovnic! (On a previous night, we stayed in Villa Argentina where we paid about the same price for a very small room overlooking a cement wall.) My husband and I were carrying backpacks (and looking pretty ratty due to much travelling around the surrounding islands by ferry) and were pleasantly surprised at the courteous treatment we received from Excelsior staff. The Villa Argentina bell hops didn't even bother helping us with our bags. The Excelsior is right next to Villa Argentina and about a ten minute walk from the city center, it has a small but modern and pleasant lobby. The rooms were clean, modern and large. Unfortunately, they have no beach but they have a sizeable cemented area where you can sit under an umbrella or jump into the clear sea as you please. On the day we left, we spent the morning swimming until our taxi arrived to take us to the airport. Although I usually prefer hotels with old-world charm and architecture, I was more than content to sit on my balcony and enjoy the fabled view of Dubrovnic. The Excelsior provided a wonderful ending to our stay in Croatia.
Have just been to check out the Excelsior hotel for a meeting in 2 years time. Whilst we were only there for 2 nights. Have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. Hotel was full of police as the US ambassador was staying there. The reception staff are a little hesitant at English and got my name totally wrong. to such an extent we could not find it on my arrival very late at night. however they did switch me to a lovely room with a balcony the next day. Rooms are standard for this type of hotel with all usual amenities. THe plumbing looks a little basic but it all worked. You need to request a room with a sea view as the others look out onto the small road at the back. The views are of the walled city of Dubrovnik and an island. it was cloudy when we were there but I imagine it can be stunning when the sun is out. The locationi is excellent as the town is a 5 minute walk and it is a lovely traffic free walled city.
