      Monday 15th Dec - early rise this morning to catch the train to Messina. We stocked up with food and water the night before as the train leaves at 7.30 am. With just enough time for a coffee and croissant for breakfast at the station we hopped on the train for an 8 hour journey. The train was not that busy so we had a cabin to ourselves.       Malta. A spectacular fortified harbour! The island is small but would warrant another visit. A tour of Valletta via horse and cart, ticked that box. Went to another walled town, Mdina, which gave great views. We toured the dungeons which was kind of corny but fun and gave grisly history of all the people who have ruled Malta, each with their own personal touch regarding punishment and torture.       The family run restaurant as part of the complex (I use the word complex loosely) opened at 7:00. We are Canadians so we sat on their patio and watched the olive wood being brought in for the pizza oven, the oven being lit, the pizza dough being kneed into balls and stored in the warming drawer, the pizzas being made and thrown, the pizzas being topped, baked and then either delivered to us or into boxes as they were picked up.
