Historical Traveler Reviews of Excelsior Nice

Great hotel, such a pleasant surprise so close to the train station

from Goldig
Can agree with the 2 previous recent reviews. Everything was just right about this hotel. Our room looked down into the inner garden courtyard that had tropical foliage. The room was quite large and looked recently refurbished as did the rest of the hotel. Small tile bathroom with shower--very clean--new plastic shower curtain. We hope to stay there again. The bus from the airport goes to the train station so it is just one block straight down from there--very easy with roll luggage after 11 or 12 hours of flying!

Enjoyed our stay

from ilusm
The hotel had a cozy sitting area where you can have a coffee and read a magazine/newspaper. They had fresh flowers in the lobby which adds a nice touch to the lovely decor. Our room was clean, big, and comfortable. It overlooked the street to other hotels, but was not noisy at all. The room had AC and the bathroom was clean. The hotel is located close to the train station and is about a 10 min walk to the Prom. des Anglais. I would stay here again.

Bait & Switch?

from tulipe57
We were very disappointed in our experience with the Hotel Excelsior. Despite reconfirming 3 days before our arrival in Nice, when we showed up to check in (carrying bags from the Europcar dealership by the nearby train station), they did not have a room for us. My French is elementary, but the first excuse seemed to be something to do with being so busy, near the train station (have they moved recently?). Then I got a story about rain damage. That may have been true but why wasn't that the first story I heard? The reception desk did claim to have booked a room for us at a comparable hotel close by. So we picked up our bags and headed over there. It was just a few blocks away, but when we got there, the new hotel (Artemis Hotel), was very drab and institutional looking. They had no idea who we were, though they did have a room to rent. Not surprisingly, even though it was supposed to be a 3-star hotel, it was 20 Euros a night cheaper than the Excelsior. The first room they sent us to was already occupied and the hotel was extremely noisy. It was the only place on our trip where I actually got my earplugs out so I could sleep a few hours. If this was the Hotel Excelsior's idea of a comparable hotel, I don't expect much from it either.

Loved the Hotel Excelsior

from JeanJan
Such a charming hotel. We stayed at the Hotel Excelsior from September 10 to September 13, 2005. From the moment we entered the reception area, I was totally charmed. The rooms which had high ceilings appeared to be newly decorated with creamy yellow paint and green antique wood furniture. The bedcovers were pastel green. Drapes were shades of yellow, green, red and cinnamon to match the cinammon and green carpet. A chair was upholstered to match bed cover. Rooms were gigantic compared to budget hotel in Paris. Rooms had a queen bed plus a daybed. Mattresses were firm with no sunken areas. Bath had a tub as well as shower. There was a problem with the satellite reception, so we were deprived of CNN for three days.

The breakfast room had crystal chandeliers and little french tables with upholstered chairs. The drapes were bright and pretty. The breakfast which was not included in rate was pretty good. The food was standard, French hotel food: croissants (chocolate, um), hard rolls, ham, cheese, yogurt, cereal with tepid milk, juice, and preserves. Coffee was strong - excellent for my taste. There was a courtyard with tables where we met friends for an aperitif. A patio adjoining breakfast room allows for outdoor dining.

Hotel is situated about one block from Niceville Station. It is a 10-block walk to pedestrian areas around Rue Massena. A few more blocks to Vieux Nice. The immediate area around the train station is somewhat seedy. This hotel is well situated if you plan to use the trains to any extent. Also, buses to the airport run frequently. The reception staff was outgoing and helpful.

Nice and clean.

Usually the most essential thing we have in mind when we are looking for a place to stay when we are on holidays is a nice and clean hotel. Those two things represent the Excelsior Hotel. Recently renovated made me think that I was the first person entered in to the room. The breakfast was well enough, the train station just 200 meters away and the pedestrian zone with the restaurants and cafes only 15 minutes walk. I recommend the Excelsior Hotel to all those they are looking for nice, clean, cheap and in a good location hotel.
