53 Persiaran Gurney Georgetown, Pulau Penang, Pinang, Malaysia, 4-226-9988

We arrived by air from KL on 20th for a five night stay. This short stay is a long awaited little bit of luxury because we are booked into the Evergreen Laurel, an excellent 5 star hotel. Our room is a superior sea view and from our seventh floor room the view is truly superb. Unfortunately when we leave the hotel and cross the road towards the sea, the beach is non existant and the smell of drains entering the sea, especially at low tide, is truly awful. However, the hotel is everything that...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia alanandchrisArriving into Penang after a long day of two flights, from Kota Bharu via Kuala Lumpur, we hopped in a taxi and drove to our accommodation just north of Georgetown, the islands capital. You may wonder why we took this route as any map of Malaysia will show that Kota Bharu and Penang are both in the very north of the country, whereas KL is towards the south. The simple answer is that it was the cheapest and quickest way, as trains don't run directly between the two. Once we had checked in we s...
Penang, Malaysia gonetilwhenever Sawasdee krap.......oooooppppsss........i mean Salam..........something like that ......we have now crossed a border and in Penang!!
That sounds like it was uneventful.........trust me 16 hours on an overnight train from Thailand to Malaysia is not!!!
Late departing as you are already aware........we found our bunks in Car 2 of the International Express and definitely made a good choice in booking 2 lower bunks as they are longer and much wider than the top...........and so to s...
Hi all
Well we had that great nights sleep and the day began with a superb breakfast........but alas still no bacon! (well pork that is!!)
Caught a bus to downtown Georgetown and tour around in there version of the CAT...........yup same as ours.........well almost.......supposed to be 15 minute intervals..........caught the first one ok...then it was very irregular to say the least.........
A look at some quaint architecture and a trip to 'another' shopping centre......

... quite amusing actually. The night market was really cool; it was 9pm but the air was still nice and warm, there was a huge variety of eateries of various nationalities all round the sides of the building, and in the centre were lots of tables. Waiters come round and take drinks orders. I got some Japanese food: breaded chicken with chicken curry and some sushi, and it was really cheap and very tasty. At the front of the market was a ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia alastair6... good guy. He’d been working on Phi Phi as a dive master for four months, and was just heading to Penang for his visa run. His scowls were caused both by boredom (he’d done this journey a few times before) and by a blazing hangover (as we all know, Thailand divemasters swim around by day and chase tourist girls in bars by night). Having snapped out of my morning moodiness, the company was appreciated and helped pass the time as we went ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia lnb203... places I had seen! The landlord was very friendly, and he drew me a map for the next couple of days of good places to visit. His one liner was "happy happy", and he did try a lot to please his guests. I spent the rest of the first day pottering around town, getting trapped in a thunderstorm, and drying off at the hotel later on, watching a DVD. The second day was spent at a temple called Kek Lok Si, which claimed ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia eddiemetal... We took some photos and went for a wander. Our walk took us to a temple and a mosque, and we found hundreds of huge (but not hairy) spiders, hanging from webs above our heads. Lovely. We found another English country house, like in the Cameron Highlands. This one looked straight our of rural England, and had lovely views over the island. We ate tea and scones for an outrageous price, and then to ...
Georgetown, Pinang, Malaysia angela_louiseA snap decision made in the morning leads us to a very quick journey to Penang, Malaysia. A small island(-ish) in the North West of the mainland, its a tropical little outcrop known for its beaches. Making our way up to the North of the island, we hit Battu Ferenghi, worryingly known as 'Foreigners Rock'. In keeping with our snap decision, and our honed travelers instinct, we didn't bother to book a place to stay in advance. Or pay heed to the fact that it is ...
