They have driven a motorway straight through the ranges in long tunnels in several places and are constructing a railway along the coast as well. We stop at a very modern service station which has explicit notices on the toilet cubicle doors telling you "squatting posture" or "sitting posture"!

I knew before that China is not a tropical country but it got a little too cold for me. I was having breakfast in my lovely Hangzhou hostel, but everytime someone opened the door, a cold gust of wind was blowing in, giving me a chill down to the bone. The forecast didn't promise anything good either. Daytime temperatures were predicted just above the single digits, and nighttime much colder, and the night falls early in eastern China. I had not eaten yet today as I had a bit of a stomach upset, presumably caused by something in the latest buffet, but I felt ready to eat now, and it was one of the best meals of this trip.

Sure enough the tomato-seller was back in business where we had had last seen him, and we got a big bag of fresh cherry tomatoes for one yuan.
