ILLEGAL ENTRY #6 (RUSSIA TO UKRAINE)

... and asked to see my document. ****. Russian police are often inhuman monsters. I handed him my passport. For strategic purposes, I pretended I didn't speak Russian. The little policeman led me out of the bus and to the police car. And I sat down in back. What a dehumanizing experience! Probably every Russian has been in this situation at some point; the two big policemen in front were about to tell me how much money I had to pay them ...

Court Hearing

Arno Writing: The court hearing went well, and after a mandatory 10 day wait we will be able to take Anastasia from the orphanage. The judge was nice and even joked at times. Before we started Luba said it was customary for the man to answer most of the questions. When we got started I was asked to stand and the judge asked me some basic questions and then told me to sit down. For almost the rest of the hour hearing Lancie had to speak. She did well, though. After the ...

Christmas

... we gave them "light up" bracelets. Every little thing is so exciting to them. It doesn't take much to entertain them. Lancie gave out chap sticks to the older kids and it was like the greatest thing anyone ever gave them. We called our kids at home and they were having a good Christmas with their grandparents. Tomorrow is our court appointment and after that we take a ...

Christmas Eve

... Eve. Merry Christmas to everyone at home! Decorations are slowly going up, here, but it's not home. I especially miss the kids now. Tomorrow A.M. the children at the orphanage will present a "concert'. I think Anastasia's class will sing. We will have a full day tomorrow, as we will have Christmas with Anastasia's class after the concert. Then we will spend some time on the phone with home, hearing all about the "Christmas Action" going on with the kids.

Snowy Monday

Arno writing: We woke up this morning and it had snowed last night. There was around 1-2 inches of snow on the ground and it was still snowing pretty hard. We saw the sun yesterday for the first time for around 60 minutes; Then it went away. :( Lancie writing: Your absolutely right Suzy! Anastasia was a Russian princess. Matter-of-fact, I think it was Disney that made a movie called "Anastasia". Actually when we were told Anastasia's name, my first reaction was, "What ...

Roadtrip

Arno writing: It's Saturday here so there's nothing we can do adoption wise. Luba asked us if we wanted to go an hour out of town to a monastery. We jumped at the opportunity to do some sightseeing. The city of Severdonetsk just seems to connect to the surrounding citites. There seems to be miles of apartment buildings that are run down. Frequently people will hang their laundry on the balconies to dry. After 50 minues of driving we came to ...

Jackpot!

... mommy's knitting. Arno writing: We were treated to a private "concert" the kids put on for us. Some of the kids are very good at musical instruments even though they are only 9 or 10 years old. Luba, our facilitator, got back from Kiev yesterday. She took a train back and it was a 14 hour trip for her. She said the train had to stop because they didn't have electricity. Ice had knocked down the ...

Sundays are fundays

... to get to the hotel, restaurant, food stores, and the orphanage. That's all we need, other than that we,ve explored a little, but there's not a whole lot to do in this city. It's spread out, but mostly with apartments, dotted with a few little food shops. There is no paperwork to be done until Wednesday, when our paperwork from the orphanage is to be complete. By then Luba will have returned and will initiate the process of getting a court date. This takes at ...

Trink nie Chilivodka - Never drink Chilivodka

... it usually is, that these guys invite you for a drink and you should'nt refuse. The Vodka was so strong I didn't realize and could'nt stop at time. So I got drunk very fast and got K.O. In the following the Ukrainian guy stole my money, my wracked watch and my mobile phone. I was lucky he was happy with it because he could steel all my equiptment with wasn't locked at that time. Next morning I decided to driv directly to Donezk to get money and to have a long rest in a hotel.
